Reading and watching material

So I am procrastinating on what I really ought to be doing aka revising my Nano novel and actually writing some fic, but god, I have had writer's block so bad for the past like month and it's NOT STOPPING (this right here is pageleaf's cue to make Sports Night jokes that I TOTALLY SEE COMING from a mile away just so you know) and I'm just unmotivated and my brain is kinda fried and I am whining, dammit. SO. So I will continue the trend of this journal slowly turning from a fic journal to a fic and also things I watch and read journal.
  • Blackout/All Clear by Connie Willis: Ngl, Blackout was a bit hard to slog through in some parts, but the payoff in All Clear was worth it. I was basically sobbing from Mike and Colin's scene near the end of All Clear straight through to the last page. Probably the part that got me the most was Eileen's "And be happy...only just think, you're going home." Asdfghjkl TEARS ALL OVER. The cool thing about these books though, is that both my parents are reading them too, cause my dad is a big Connie Willis fan and my mom and I both read To Say Nothing of the Dog and loved it, so. We did actually agree as a family that those books we would make the best BBC miniseries EVER and that is all we want out of life. And then we started dreamcasting it. (My mom is hilarious, she's essentially all "How about just all the Downton Abbey people? That works, right?")
  • The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern: Finally got around to reading this book, which I really wanted to do after this author wrote a really super-fantastic pep talk for NaNo this year, and I really liked it. The imagery and the prose were just stunning, and the language was incredibly vivid. It was the sort of book you can't put down.
  • Nana to Kaoru: Let's just say I have a really surprising amount of feelings and love for this series. Okay? Okay.
  • Watchmen: This was on TV, so I watched it and really liked it. (Admittedly, I haven't read the comics, so I can't say how it compares to them, but still.) Rorschach was definitely, unironically my favorite. He was amazing, especially in the final scene. I do think that movie could have handled the female characters better, though. I don't know if it was just me, but a) Laurie's and her mother's Stripperific costumes (spandex: good if you are a super-fast distance runner, sprinter, or hurdler. Especially if you're an Olympic runner. The fastest people alive wear that stuff. It is, however, not good if you are fighting criminals who would shank you in the back.) while most of the men got full-body armor type things, and Rorschach got a trenchcoat b) the fact that Laurie's only development as a character was through her relationships with Daniel, Dr. Manhattan, and (to some extent) The Comedian and that her role in the movie was based around those relationships...well, that left a bit of an unpleasant taste in my mouth. :/
Anyway. Fun stuff. Aaaaand I'm going to see The Woman in Black on Saturday too, so that's exciting.

movie: watchmen, book: the night circus, movies that i watch, misusing lj for fun and lack of profit, books that i read, book: blackout/all clear, my family is a little insane, manga: nana to kaoru
