Fantasy Novels and CGI Flicks

Some of you already know that a decade ago I was helping pen a science fiction novel. After a several chapters I fell out with the co-writer and now only have half space adventure with a cliff hanger launch of a Buran and other literary wounds to lick over. For the last few years I have been hiding in an obscure corner of the Internet, sulking whilst blogging, geo-tagging obscure photographs and selling ABC Friends a virtual rain water tank I made in Second Life. In some ways, this blog is a result of  redirecting my efforts towards another project.

Last night I watched the film Beowulf (2007). This film caught me quite by surprise with an utterly horrifying Grendel monster, slashing, chewing and ripping. The CGI is good and gradually drops into the background as the pace begins to step up, swing, swoop then soar. I only had a memory about the original poem and appreciated the detail and trouble taken by the script writers to build in the viking and danish historical connections and language references.

I have some fond memories of reading Terry Pratchett and his Discworld fantasy novels. Side splitting humour that I must touch base with again. I think it is time this term break to read a novel from cover to cover.
