My year 9 students did not win a place with their 3in6 competition machinima entry but I was pleased by the reaction by the other judges. They were inspired by a collection of odd samples including the
ACMI training workshop,
Star Trek fan productions and more. Looks like we will need a new category to judge this for future competitions to do justice to this work.
Keith and I made the hard decision today with
VITTA to pull off the Internet all the 3in6 competition video submissions by primary and secondary students, their directors cuts, animations and machinima ..
the entire archive.
When directly challenged with the potential for copyright abuse and legal action, we could not firmly identify the ownership of any of the snippits of songs sung, played or recorded by the students. Not even those just sung by some of my students as a backing track could be permitted as we do not have ownership of the music or lyrics.
Interestingly enough, we then decided to move the entire collection to the a
Moodle area that we had previously set up for the 3in6 schools. This course was created for education, study and research by teachers and students for this project with downloadable resources, worksheets, forums etc. Most importantly, the competition files are still available online for use but no longer on the general Internet or available on DVD. To view them you need to be invited and authenticated to this virtual classroom.
Given our limited understanding of the new legislation, we think that this is the best way to go forward. If any copyright holders wish to examine this body of work then they will need to go back to school.
