IMAP stopped working with
Thunderbird. I suspect that it happened about the time that I upgraded to version 1.5. Downgrading the software to
Thunderbird version 1.0.7 took only a few minutes and kept my settings. This has fixed the problem but now I suspect that it may have happened when I installed a rogue extension that only works with version 1.5. I'll need to go slow with adding so many extra bits and probably should have first tried to run it in
safe mode.
Whilst IMAP was off the air, I took the trouble to make the tough decision and move the bulk of my IT list mail to
Gmail, Google's free webmail service. This took the good part of an hour as I worked through all the
Edulist mailing lists that I subscribe to. Although Gmail has a 2 Gb limit, I can still clear, flush and archive it all to my local computer by entering in some POP mail settings. I might do this once per year or just dump it all and use the
Edulists archive feature.
I hope that this helps me to recover my inbox so that I can read and reply to my personal e-mail without the background noise of all the list e-mail. I didn't need more e-mail filters for my local client, just a place to park the inbound list mail so that I can read it without feeling guilty that I have not done my students a great disservice by trying to read it all.
I notice that a colleague Keith uses
FastMail and I'll admit that it was tempting to go with my
Yahoo! mail account. For now will reserve final judgement about this move until the end of 2006.
