Melbourne Dutch community festival

Feb 26, 2006 02:57

An annual festival is held each February by the Dutch community in Melbourne. We had fun with jumping castles, gocart racing and Sjoelen. Sjoelen (or sjoelbak) is a traditional game that the people of the Netherlands have enjoyed for many years. The skill at winning sjoelen is in the wrist action, or so they say.

The kids were also entertained by Dutch variations on songs and dances by Mr Whiskers (ala Franciscus Henri) as L and I poked about the rumble and craft stalls including some Delft Blue pottery made around the corner in Boronia. We filled our bellies with plates of Dutch food such as poffertjes, zuurkool and croquettes. As it was a hot day, later we each enjoyed a colourful treat of a gelati (Italian icecream for a hot day)
