Quick story!

So, I’ve worked at Borders for a little over a year now and it has been pretty good to me. We’re a pretty big store, and along with Ann Arbor, we get some pretty cool book signings. Of course, over my time with the company, there haven’t been too many signings that I actually cared about personally. But that all changed last night!

Last night we were fortunate enough to be visited by Mr. Brad Meltzer. Don’t know who Brad Meltzer is? Well, if you happen to look at the New York Times Bestseller list, you’ll notice that his new book, The Book of Fate (which is a great title) happens to be sitting in the #1 spot.

But I’ve never read his novels. You see, aside from being a bestselling mystery/suspense author, Brad Meltzer also writes comics. If you’re a nerd, you might have read Identity Crisis, which was the big deal in the DC Universe two years ago. It was also the comic which really got me into comics, as it is one of the most well written pieces of literature I have ever read. Though, I’m not big into comics presently due to money and time, the fact that (in my opinion) one of the greatest comic authors I have ever read was going to be in our store was a pretty big deal.

So, as soon as I saw he was coming (oh so many months ago) I was very excited. I talked to Keith, our events guy about it whenever I go the chance. I totally would have signed up to work had I not already been on the schedule. Anyway, I said this would be quick and that seems to be a lie so I’m going to hurry up. I brought in my hardcover Identity Crisis trade to be signed and told Keith to call me when the line was gone because I had work to do and stuff. Fortunately, I got to listen to him talk while I was on my break and that was pretty cool. Aside from novels and comics, he was also responsible for the TV series Jack & Bobby. I never watched it (and neither did most people) but I know my mom enjoyed it.

ANYWAY, there were 125 people there for the event which is huge and so after Brad was done with everyone else, Keith called me back and I got to be the very last person to have their book signed!

The first thing Brad did was thank me for looking out for him. Apparently Keith had told him that I was a fan and that I had been telling people at the store about the event ever since at had been announced. He shook my hand, told me I was awesome, and signed my book “Paul, thanks for looking out for me, pal.” Yes, that’s right; Brad Meltzer and I are pals. After that we talked comics for a bit. We actually had a legit conversation about Fables and how cool a Fables movie could potentially be.

And that is the end of my story. He was totally nice and much less intimidating than Joss Whedon and we are best friends now. Also, when I eventually write a book, I’m going to call it The Book of Fate II: Brad Meltzer Rocks, because Book of Fate is such a good title.
