Plaids,

I don't know what to say after reading your account of 9/11. I just remember sitting at my desk and hearing someone say "the plane hit the WTC" and one co-worker started calling her family because her father sometimes went to the WTC for work (he wasn't there that day) & another talked to his dad via cell phone - glad to hear he had taken the late train from Trenton that was turned around and sent back. Another co-worker wasn't so lucky...one of her very good friends died that day.

It was very surreal...being in NJ, within "commuting distance" of NYC, and the impact it had in the area for the weeks and months to come. Seeing signs on 295, 95 & Rte 1 stating that all ways into NYC were closed. That has always stood out in my mind. Also...I was so proud of my company when we took linens and other items in to the students from NYC and Pace that were displaced because their residence halls were off limits, damaged or destroyed.

The other memory I have from that time is the continuous silence near work. We are right by the Trenton/Mercer Airport and it's normal to hear the hum of the planes landing and taking off. After the flight ban was lifted it was somewhat unsettling to hear the planes.

I'm so sorry to hear of your co-worker's friend. It's so sad how many people were personally touched by the disaster.

So many companies and individuals were incredibly generous in donating needed items, everyone really wanted to do what they could to help. The reaction really reaffirmed many people's faith in our countrymen.

I remember while the flight plan was in force the only air traffic noise to be heard were the fighter jets....
