In the news today was
an article about a postman who got suspended for telling his customers how to opt out of receiving junk mail. The Jeremy Vines show on Radio 2 (which usually I hate) decided that it would be in the public good not only to discuss whether Royal Mail were right to suspend him, but to tell you how to opt out of unaddressed junk mail. AFAICT what they mean is mail which is targetted to your address but to "Occupier". [edit - nope. It is completely unaddressed. You can't opt out of "occupier" mailings.]
For junk mail which is directed to you, you can use the
Mailing Preference Service. According to Jeremy Vines' page on the BBC site: To stop receiving unaddressed mail, send your name, address, postcode and signature to 'Door To Door Opt Outs, Royal Mail Door To Door, Kingsmead House, Oxpens Road, Oxford, OX1 1RX. Alternatively, email optout@royalmail.co.uk (this results in them sending you a form you have to fill in and return).
Other suggestions for dealing with junk mail were to return it to sender without a stamp, or in the business reply envelope. The really mean people suggested adding extra weight to it to increase the cost to the marketer.
