Day 21: One of your own theories you’ve conjured up?
I don't have any theories that haven't been already discussed throughout varies forums or places...
But I guess I can say one of my favorite theories, anyway ^_^
On tumblr there was a user by the name of "thegerudo" who always posted awesome theories and stuff, and he posted one regarding this particular one. Anywho, when you talk to the old man near the well, he states:
“A long time ago… There was a man in this very village who had an eye they said could see the truth! Now usually, you have to train your mind’s eye most strenuously to actually see the truth… But this fella, no, they say he had a different way of doing things… His house stood where the well is now…”
It was assumed, by most people, that the Lens of Truth was a Sheikah creation, but in this theory it explains that the Lens of Truth was not created by a member of the Sheikah, but rather the old man who used to live where the well sits. The Lens of Truth was created in order for someone to see the truth or, in the game’s case, see past illusions or trickery. In Ocarina of Time, Impa, a member of the Sheikah, goes to the Shadow Temple without the aid of the Lens of Truth. It is believed that the Sheikah, since they are magical beings, could have had the power to see the “truth” without the Lens of Truth. Because this power was of great worth to the other races (mainly a greedy Hyrulean), it would be plausible that the Bottom of the Well was a torture chamber in which the old man would try to get the ability to see the “truth” or at least find a way to capture that “eye” in which the Sheikah had gained. Eventually, the Sheikah, being the powerful beings that they are, were able to retaliate and seal the Old Man within his own chamber, where he would be called Bongo Bongo. It was explained, in the theory, that this would justify Bongo Bongo’s aggression to Sheik, who is disguised as a Sheikah, while he ignores Link until he gets in the way.
I believe this theory to be true. The Shadow Temple is where Hyrule's hidden bloody past is tucked away, and the torturing of a race is definitely bloody. Its also evident that the Sheikah are heavily affiliated with the shadow temple. Also worth mentioning that in the OoT manga Link asks Sheik what his eye symbol meant and Sheik told him that originally it was just and eye and that the Sheikah were used as "shadows" to protect the Royal Family of Hyrule and that at some point in time the Royal Family betrayed the Sheikah and then their tears were added to the symbol. If you read the inscriptions at the very beginning of the dungeon, you will find:
"Here is gathered Hyrule's bloody
history of greed and hatred...
What is hidden in the darkness...
Tricks full of ill will...
You can't see the way forward...
One who gains the eye of truth
will be able to see what is hidden
in the darkness. "
It is extremely possible that this "greed" that keeps being mentioned could be related to the Shiekah's gift. It's obviously a power that many people would like to gain.
Certainly in any case, The Shadow Temple remains to be probably my most favorite dungeon of all Zelda's. The music is terrifying, the dungeon itself is completely unique to any other dungeon I've ever beaten.. it's dark... but it's not evil. It shows that you need to seek the truth. The truth is so beautiful and great, but the simple reason as to why this dungeon is so dark and sinister is because.. you can easily see the truth in the light. But, commonly noticed even in everyday life, the truth isn't so easily discovered. It's often hidden away in the darkness.
