“River, I told ya to steer clear of the job an’ it was the first thing ya did!” Mal’s voice roared through the ship, catching Jayne off-guard as he stepped out of his bunk. He went toward the source of the noise and found the captain and crazy congregated in the mess. Mal stood on one side of the table, arms crossed and frowning while River stood on the other side, head hung low.
“What the ruttin’ hell is all this ruckus?” Jayne asked before Mal started to yell again. The captain turned to him and pointed to River.

“Seems our resident genius went behind our backs to finish the job,” he stated as he turned back to the girl. “The doc left with Kaylee and it’s the first thing she does and not only that. Knocked the guy unconscious she did, and got his henchmen following her.”

“Where’d they go?” he asked as his hand went to his gun on the holster. Mal shook his head.

“They’re gone. The job’s done.” Jayne relaxed and crossed his arms.

“Then what’s the big ke ti?” Jayne asked and scoffed. Mal pursed his lips and stepped closer to Jayne.

“The fact that the little witch went behind my back and did this. It ain’t the way it works ‘round here,” Mal emphasized. Jayne turned to River, who was now looking at him with teary eyes that were ready to spill over. He knew that she was at fault for doing what she wasn’t supposed to, but his insides clenched a bit, feeling bad for the girl.

“Mal, don’t take it so hard on her, she’s only trying t’ help the crew,” Jayne stated and turned back to him. “Sides, it wasn’t her idea. It was mine.”

“What?!”

“Yeah,” he added, “Told her that she could. She’s a big girl, even if she’s a little crazy.”

“Jayne, I should have ya thrown in the airlock for dis’beying orders!” Mal yelled at the mercenary and grabbed a fistful of his shirt, bringing him closer to him. “If ya do it ‘gain, it won’t be the airlock where I’m throwin’ ya.”

With that, Mal marched out of the mess, leaving Jayne alone with River. She sniffled lightly as she stared at him with curiosity.

“Why did Jayne-man help the girl?” she asked timidly, “Jayne-man did not say such thing.”

“It don’t matter,” he brushed it off, “Just don’t go doin’ crazy stuff like that ‘gain. Ain’t gonna do it next time.”

River smiled and nodded in agreement. Jayne turned to walk out to the crew quarters when he was suddenly stopped by a pair of scrawny arms enveloping him in a tight embrace from behind. She rested her head between his shoulder blades, breathing in his husky scent.

“Squishy,” she whispered, and released him from her arms.

River caught him off-guard. She had not called him that in a while.

He turned around to yell at her, but had disappeared from the mess. He rolled his eyes and continued into the crew quarters.

“I prefer ‘thanks’,” he muttered as he heard her laugh in the distance.
