I'll take ways I didn't plan to spend the afternoon for 500, Alex

I meant, at one point, to go into work to use my email to send off a report for 5 minutes today. Instead, I was there for 3 hours, got nothing work-related accomplished, and left the place in such a mess that two complete work areas are unusable until maintenance comes in.

On the plus side, we did manage to *keep the lab from burning to the ground*. So that's all good.

What happened is this - I spend the morning having no luck finding fabric, or new books, or anything worth my having driven into town. Went home feeling frustrated. 5 minutes after I get in the door, the two technicians who were in for the weekend, called me wondering if someone was doing other work in the lab that might 'cause the smoky smell. It's certainly been known to happen, given the nature of our work, so they were going to check out the usual areas, and I told them to call down our contact list. They were going to get back to me, but I figured I'd just be too distracted all afternoon, so I went right in. When I got there, they'd left the building but hadn't managed to get in contact with anyone (why they just didn't keep going down the list until they hit someone - I don't know). But they left a message with our H&S's mother, who managed to contact him when we couldn't (the joy of unpredictable cellphone reception in the sticks), who phoned someone else, and they all showed up and went looking shortly after we started going 'oh look, black smoke, no great big white plumes of smoke from the roof'. And the fire department showed up about 5 minutes after that.

And then I got to spend the rest of the afternoon phoning management types, reassuring them that there's not much damage, just mess, and no one hurt. And we can't tell what caused it either. We've never been so lucky to have 2 random volunteers in for the weekend. And if they'd picked their usual shift time, they would have left the site an hour before they smelled the smoke.

So, an unaccomplished day for work, but, I don't have to search for new work tomorrow, as the lab is still standing.

In other news - less than two weeks to SDCC and Tangeriner keeps winding me up!
