Apparently when you visit Amsterdam on a weekend, it's smart to plan ahead. I didn't, and by the time I went looking for lodging, nearly everything was all booked up. I did find a delightful looking little canal boat for 75 Euro a night, which would be very romantic if I were traveling with someone special, but on my own it just seemed kind of needless. I was finally able to find a room in a tourist inn for 35. Not bad for 8:30 on a Friday night.
I located Anna and her friends and we hit the town. Alyssa and Amanda were determined to try space cake, so Anna and I went along to babysit. The place we ended up going was featured in Ocean's 12, which is pretty cool, even though I haven't seen it. But I've been there, which I'm sure will be pretty neat once I finally do see the movie. After that we tried, and failed, to find the red light district, finally giving up and making our way to our respective homes for the night.
When I got to the room the was a documentary about condoms on the Discovery Channel. It was in Dutch, but I think I got the gist of it. My new roommates came in just as a program about Katie Poirer (remember her?) came on. The TV had just said, "In the town of Moose Lake, Minnesota..." when they asked where I was from. My response drew cries of, "No way! That's where they're talking about! Are you for real, or are you just saying that cause they said it on TV?" It was funny. When the TV was off and the lights were out, I got about 5 minutes of peace before one of them started snoring like you wouldn't believe. I swear, he sounded like a bear. This didn't sit well with one of his buddies, who began kicking the underside of his bed every 30 seconds. When that didn't work, he got up and started beating him with a pillow. Nothing. I am, by the way, laughing my head off at this point. Finally, he took the pillow and shoved it in his face. This, somehow, only served to make it worse. I was treated to a rotation of kicking, beating, and smothering for about 20 minutes, at which point the novelty wore off and I gave into exhaustion. All in all it was a good night. I have new accomodations tonight, and I can only hope my new instant friends are as much fun.
