It's OK, seems LJ did post you comment on my sales page, though, so I replied there. :)

I am personally a collector that likes to display my stuff and cuddle some of my plushes every once in a while, but I keep all the tags on them and make sure they are in good condition. If I buy something used, then I have no problem using it, but if I buy something in the original packaging I'm going to keep it in there. :> Although ideally I'll have two, so one I can keep in the packaging and one I can open and touch and hold in my hands.

I definitely still consider people who use the things they buy collectors! Unless, say, you buy a notepad and fill it all up then throw it away. I'd consider that person a collector of other things, but if you don't keep it in the end it's just like any other unspecial notepad you'd buy at a dollar store. But everyone does things in the way that makes them feel best. :D I have trouble using anything I have, even non-collections, because I want to keep them pristine but then I just end up hoarding a pile of things wrapped in plastic in a drawer... and that's not fun. So I really try to get some use out of things these days ( ... )

Yeah, that makes sense. I tend to keep things like notepads after I've used them or mod extra pages and things into dry erase boards or magnets for the fridge. That way nothing goes to waste! I saved some pages from a Pokemon Time journal and now I keep all my grocery notes on a laminated Squirtle page. :)

I think part of my apprehension comes from the fact that I have OCD. So, a lot of the times if I get an idea for a craft project, I have to buy a NIP item to use. I have been getting better in that some things I can just wash and then use, but there are still times where it causes me to panic...

I do try and only use common items/things I know no one is actively searching for. Still, I'm really glad that everyone here is so open about different types of collectors! I sort of ran away for a while after I had some issues but I'd really love to come back into collecting!

Ahh I love that idea! I have a notebook page I want to laminate as well. Just... I'm not sure how to laminate something. XD So it's tucked away for now. But I'd love to use it exactly for what you mentioned, grocery lists and the like. :)

I can definitely understand! I don't like to say I have OCD because -- well, primarily, I'm not diagnosed or anything -- and compared to a lot of people I have a pretty easy time of it and I don't want to demean anyone who has much more difficult struggles than me! Though I tend to think I have OCD tendencies, at any rate. I feel the same kind of apprehension about using something I don't have a backup of. I never feel safe unless I have a backup... even when it comes to items in video games. XD My Pokemon bags are always bursting! I really commend you for trying. :D

Aha, I knew I remembered your username. You've made stamps, right? :D I'm glad to see you back!

If you have a Kinkos or other copy shop around, that's where you'd go to ask about lamination!

I think you can also get adhesive laminating pouches that don't need a machine... but they're a little hard to get "perfect" with no bubbles, heh.

They also have remarkably affordable home laminators, I have this one and it does really well for "around the house once in a while lamination."

I'm kind of on both sides with the using items. :'D
I mean, I could never imagine writing on any of my paper items, or wasting the ink from markers or stampers, but,
;___; Plushies just look so cute sometimes it's impossible not to go cuddle with them. Still, if they're boxed, or have nice tags, I stay away in fear of damaging them. .__.

If you only buy things you want to use, that's probably the practical way to go about it. If an item's never going to be resold, then its resale value doesn't really matter in the first place.
If you collect with the plan of it becoming an investment, like the massive Eevee collections everywhere could be, then keeping everything minty fresh is pretty important. D:

For modding stuff...
If it's something like tearing a $100+ plush apart to learn the pattern? That's just terrible.
But working with something affordable and not super insanely rare? There shouldn't be any harm. Once someone's bought it, it's theirs. If there's no intention to resell, then it really doesn't matter what happens, right?

Hehe, there are definitely limits! At least for me. If I wanted to make a pattern out of something rare, I would just trace the outer seams and experiment! Like, I could never see myself ripping into a Canvas Vaporeon. Oh, just the mere thought makes me queasy!

And I think, as long as it is something you will love and cherish? Go ahead and make your character! I mod Monster High dolls and I kind of care for the ones I make myself more, because of all the time and effort put into them. :3 They're special because I made them special, if that makes sense.

I consider people who use their things to still be collectors. If I had the money, I might buy one copy to use and one to keep nice, but since I don't, some things just end up staying packaged, like all the official straps that I've gotten so far. I really want to get a plush to cuddle, but the ones in my collection are small so far and harder to cuddle, and some are on the expensive side for my wallet, so I just pick them up, pet them, and maybe take cute pictures with them. I do love just occasionally petting my Samurott Pokedoll, because they gave him such amazing contours! I hope to someday get a big, cheaper plush to cuddle.

I don't mind people modding things. It's really none of my business what they do with their things. I could never take apart a plush myself, especially a rarer one, but if someone enjoys it, then I think they should be able to do what they want. Some of the figure mods just make me think of people as collectors AND artists, especially when they're so beautiful.
