And...it starts.

-----------

"Baaaaagh!" With a cry of pain and frustration, the hard-headed dragonling crashed to the ground, thrown by the force of his opponent's attack. The wild Mightyena loomed, baring its fangs as it steadied itself from the recoil of its Take Down attack.

"Hang in there, Bahamut!" the blonde-haired trainer urged her Pokémon, feeling that sick sinking sensation of having underestimated her opponent. If that Mightyena had the ability to use Take Down, her Bagon may well be outclassed. But true to his species, Bahamut was a stubborn little cuss, and the dragon was already back on his feet. "Focus Energy!" was Trina's command, and the Bagon's eyes glinted as he brought his concentration to a point, channeling those mysterious powers each Pokémon could wield. Hopefully he could withstand another attack...

"Yeeeena!" the enemy growled, flashing his fangs as his eyes also glinted. Trina recognized the attack; not Bahamut's Focus Energy, but an unsettling Scary Face. And beneath his hard helmet, Bahamut momentarily quailed and whimpered, but one single Scary Face wouldn't slow him down too much.

"Now! Headbutt!" she commanded, and the dragonling lowered his head and charged at the dark Pokémon, crashing into its side with the full force of his previous Focus Energy behind the attack. The Mightyena yelped in surprise and pain, its legs collapsing beneath it as the two combatants went into a tumble. Bahamut regained his ground, rolling to his feet with ease, while the Mightyena flailed as it came to an uncontrolled stop. The Bagon glared down his opponent, awaiting the next attack, but the Mightyena had apparently had enough; it turned tail and fled into the thicker grasses.

Bahamut blinked. "Gonn?" the dragon growled, looking to Trina for guidance.

The blonde trainer looked from her partner to the waving grass in the wake of the Mightyena, then shook her head. "Let it go, 'Hamut; you more than showed him." This seemed to please the little dragon, who crossed his forearms over his chest and struck a victory pose, which he seemed to think would look quite impressive. "N-n-naaaairrr!" came a titter of amusement from the sinuous beast beside Trina, and she turned with a reproachful look to her oldest friend even as Bahamut growled a low note of annoyance. "Tiamat, you've got levels on him yet, and you're not even fully evolved yourself!" she admonished the Dragonair, who tilted her head in a gesture of acquiescence, but still seemed to be on the verge of what passed for laughter in her kind. The dwarfish Bagon was not at all amused; no surprise to Trina, who was the peacemaker between the two rivals for her affection. It was funny how they had little issue with the other members of her team, but Bahamut regarded Tiamat as a bossy older sibling with an unasked-for opinion she always shared, and Tia, for her part, seemed to love nothing more than provoking the hot-tempered little Bagon.

The Dragonair tittered one last time, then raised up on her impressive length to scan the area. "Anything else around?" Trina questioned, not voicing her disappointment that the battle hadn't brought Bahamut to the point of evolution. She knew he had to be close to going Shelgon, but she didn't know how close. Some trainers could afford or were gifted Pokédex systems, but even with her gym challenge successes, she chose to invest her winnings in items that directly helped her team, rather than investing in equipment that cost many times what a good first aid kit ran. Still, it would've come in handy to match up Bahamut's foes; that Mightyena had to have had close to ten levels on the Bagon.

"Gonngon," Bahamut muttered when the Dragonair shook her head. Trina was relieved when Tiamat didn't bait the frustrated Bagon; she really didn't want to have to stuff one or both of them back into their Pokéballs. "Darnit. Well, I suppose we should find another patch-" She was cut off by the insistant jangling of her cell phone. Reaching under her red vest, she unclipped the slim blue phone from her belt. "...Unlisted number?" she questioned aloud at the display before flipping it open. "Hello?"

"Hello!" crackled a cheery voice on the other end. "Is this the trainer Trina Andrews?"

"This is," she replied, her free hand coming to rest on Bahamut's head as the Bagon walked up beside her.

"Great! This is Professor Oak!" A thrill ran through Trina. THE Professor Oak!? Famous across regions as a Pokémon Professor? Whatever could he want with her? "I bet you're wondering why I've contacted you." She grinned wordlessly as she listened. "Well, it'd be easier explained in person, I have to admit. What city is closest to where you are?"

"Uh, I've been training outside Blackthorn," she answered, her mind still a whirl of confusion.

"Excellent! I'm not far from there! How about we meet at the Pokémon Center there? I do apologize for interrupting your training regimen, as I'm sure that's what a fine up-and-coming dragon trainer such as yourself would be doing outside of Blackthorn, but I think what I have to say would be of much interest to you, and I can offer repayment for the use of your time."

"Th-that won't be necessary, Professor!" she chirped back. "We'd be needing to come back for a rest soon anyway!"

"No matter! You may just be needing it anyway!" the voice answered rather cryptically, but cheerfully enough. "See you in about an hour?"

"That'd be enough time," Trina answered affirmatively, while Tiamat slid closer to her with an amused expression on her smooth draconic face.

"Fabulous! Talk to you then, Trina!" There was a click before Trina had time to respond.

The girl looked down at her phone, then clipped it back to her belt. "I wonder what this is all about... Guess I'll just have to meet him to find out." She looked to her dragons and smiled weakly. "Gonna have to return, guys; I think I might need some speed now." The two returned willingly to their balls, and the trainer exchanged the two for one other. "Rhapsody!" she called as the ball released its occupant, a slender blue creature that spread soft, cloudlike wings.

"Taaaaaariiiia?" the avian dragon sing-songed, tilting her head.

"I need a lift back to Blackthorn's Pokémon Center," Trina explained to the Altaria with a grin.

"Aaaal!" Rhapsody responded, crouching down so that her trainer could slide into position on her back. With a few flaps of her ineffectual-looking wings, the Altaria had taken to the air. She may not be the fastest flier, but she was steady and true, and she had a gorgeous singing voice to pass the time.

"I think things are gonna get interesting," Trina shouted over the rush of the wind as Rhapsody rose higher. "Taaaariiiii!" was the dragon's response.
