"Oak and Birch have just left the building. Oak's going off on a Pidgeot, Birch on a Swellow. They're heading off to the south."
"Excellent," crackled the voice over the comlink. "And who were they talking to?"
"Two young female trainers. I'll have the recorder in a few moments from Dakatsu with the conversation, but from what I overheard, they've been charged with investigating Latios and Latias."
"Very good. Forward it as soon as you have it in your possession."
"Certainly, sir. Should I follow the Professors?"
"Actually, no. Your assignment is now to follow this trainer pair. Record their progress and forward any pertinent information back to HQ. If they get too close to certain sensitive areas, distract them."
"Sir. You're assigning me to tail a pair of girls when there's so much at stake?"
"Exactly. If these two have been entrusted with investigating the Dragon Twins, there must be something about them to inspire that much confidence. Whatever it is, we must learn it, and keep them out of our business. Your skills are what the situation demands. This is an order, Tekiya."
"Very well, sir. Tekiya out." She closed the comlink on her wristband abruptly, not trusting herself to keep from making a scathing remark. The voice on the other end may have been only her direct superior with limited authority, but obedience was demanded of her; better to be curt with replies than talk back. The girl leaned back against the treetrunk and seethed inwardly. Her talents squandered on tailing a couple of children while her associates were in the thick of preparations? It was an assignment beneath her talents, and it promised to put her own goals in jeopardy. But maybe she could still accomplish it.
Tekiya was her name, the only name she had. She must've been born with another name, but all she remembered was this nickname; "faker." It suited her well, especially now, perched in a tree outside the Blackthorn Pokémon Center with camouflaged clothing and facepaint hiding her from view. She looked to the wall of the Center, where a small purplish form clung to the windowsill of the room where the Professors had met the two girls. Pursing her lips, she imitated the flutelike tones of a Swablu, the signal for the Gligar to return to her. The gliding scorpion Pokémon detached from the wall, catching a gust of air to swoop up into the tree, where he latched onto a branch above her. Attached to his back was a sensitive microphone, which had hopefully recorded the conversation that had occurred in that room. Tekiya switched it off and removed it, with a nod of approval to the Gligar before recalling him to his Pokéball. Exposing the contact plate of the recorder, she plugged it into the port on her PDA to download the data and send it back to HQ. Now, to wait for the transfer to be completed, and try to figure out how this snag was going to affect her plans, and how to salvage them despite this pathetic assignment.
Trina was glad to get out of the crowded Pokémon Center and back out into the fresh air and open spaces beyond. A new Pokéball was at her belt, and she was eager to introduce her to the rest of her team. Leaving the Blackthorn outskirts, she followed a stream and soon found a pool fed by mountain runoff. "Chilly, but it'll have to do," she murmured aloud as she tapped open a Pokéball. In a flash of gleaming crimson, a sinuous form appeared in the water, forcing waves onto the pebbly shores as its size displaced water. Immediately the head with its powerful jaws rose above the water's surface, angry eyes glaring out for any sign of a fight.
"Easy, Charybdis!" Trina called to the brilliant Gyarados. "No battle on the agenda right now!" The Gyarados tossed her head and seemed to grumble a bit as she lowered herself, her ruby scales glittering in strong contrast to the sapphire reflection of the sky in the rippling water. Trina had captured Charybdis as a Magikarp, focusing her attention on one among a school that seemed to gleam golden rather than the more usual orangish tones. When Charybdis had evolved to this scarlet shade rather than the normal light blue, she'd found herself the center of much attention, much to the Atrocious Pokémon's aggravation. These so-called "shining" Pokémon were a rarity among rarities, and still no one could answer the question of why these aberrant colorations appeared.
Taking her attention from the Gyarados, Trina then tapped open her other Pokéballs, releasing her two longest companions, the Dragonair and Bagon, first, and then the cotton-winged Altaria, then the spike-furred Jolteon. After each had a few moments to get their bearings, she called their names. "Charybdis! Tiamat! Bahamut! Rhapsody! Roxy! There's a new teammate joining us on a new adventure! I'd like you all to meet Blayze!" And with that, she released the Charmander.
Blayze found herself the center of attention when she emerged, but it didn't seem to phaze the Charmander all that much. She simply looked at each Pokémon in turn, murmuring a soft greeting of, "Chaaar," to each. Charybdis soon looked away in disinterest; Rhapsody trilled a soft melody of greeting; Roxy hopped all around the lizard to get her scent; Tiamat inclined her head graciously; and Bahamut strode up into her face and snorted.
"Baaaagongon." He crossed his stubby arms and glared.
"Bahamut! Blayze is a teammate now!" Trina chided, recognizing the signs of jealousy in the little dragon.
Bahamut snorted again, then suddenly changed his entire response, turning his back on Blayze as if ignoring her. This earned a quizzical look from the Charmander, to which Trina could just shrug weakly.
"Anyway...according to the Pokédex readout, you're at level 10 already...and you inherited the move Rock Slide from your father? Wow, that's impressive!" Trina said to the little fire-tailed lizard, who grinned, happy to have pleased her new trainer. Trina pressed a few more buttons on the device, experimenting with the view modes, then sighed softly. "I'll have to play around with it later. Everyone, take a stretch for a bit--I need to call Miv." Trina then seated herself on a rock and pulled out her phone, dialing in her brother's number.
