Her watch dangled lifelessly around one narrow wrist as she sat at the desk, her left ankle tucked under her other thigh. She surveyed her surroundings with a sense of disinterest. A pale English muffin had been abandoned on one side of her desk. The host of an MTV show gesticulated excitedly on the television set across the room. A sticky residue, softening on the warm wooden surface, reached for her elbow. She sat before the computer, her hand positioned unmoving on the mouse as it had been for several minutes.

Distractions.

It didn't take much to get her sidetracked. Sunlight attempted to crawl through the dirty windows as she fiddled absentmindedly with her mouse pad. The phone rang. She waited for someone else to get it. Upon realizing she was the only one in the room, she reached over and checked the caller ID. A familiar name crossed the screen, so she answered. There was no response. She ended the call and kept the phone nearby.

Thunder rumbled menacingly in the distance, but the sunshine still tried to gain dominance.

Family members ambled in and out of the room, making general comments that were directed at no one. The washing machine hummed loudly, spinning sand and salt out of clothing. The peaches on the counter continued to ripen. She had too many thoughts and not enough motivation.

It was almost troubling, but in a comfortable way.
