A New Year

Jan 13, 2013 08:52

Here begins the fifth year of documenting my life online, as proof that I have lived. Not going to making too many changes this year. Still going to be updating live journal even though it often feels post-apocalyptic there. Also still going to be doing an entry every two weeks, though I'm changing my arbitrary due date to Sunday instead of Saturday. Right now, weeks don't mean anything to me. But when I was working, it often felt like Sunday would have been a better day to do it. I'd always like to update it more often than that, but I just don't have that much to talk about, especially now during the job search. Though it would take the focus off me, as I'd probably try to find other things to write about. Entries aren't going to have any set length, though they'll be a couple paragraphs at least knowing how I ramble.

I don't have a funky theme for this year, other than it's my fifth year of doing this. I don't' know what this year will bring, but I think it's going to be good. Right now, I got a lot to look forward to. I brought in the New Year in an excellent fashion by going up to Eau Claire and hanging out with friends. I'm not stressing out about not finding a job yet, and I've been pretty aggressive in applying for jobs.  I know I'll think of something. Pretty soon though, I'm going to scour the area for volunteer opportunities. Got to keep my skills sharp somehow, and It wouldn't look good on my resume to stay idle too long. Also, since I now have access to a vehicle, and since I'm in a area where awesome things are a drivable distance away, I'm looking forward going to more "things" this year. Of course, with no income, that well be difficult.

So I've been toying around with the idea of doing something grand lately. I think I want to make it my life goal to visit all 50 of these United States. I've already got Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan, Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming*, South Dakota, Indiana*, New York, Washington, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico out of the way. And pretty soon, if all goes according to plan, I'll have Hawaii too. I've been thinking about this for a while, hence the reason I decided to go to New Mexico last year. I think it would be a fun thing to do over the course of a lifetime. Plus, I could go into bonus rounds and do all the provinces of Canada too. Already got British Columbia and Ontario down. There's what, six more to go? Close, turns out there were two I didn't know. Anyway, I'm considering the "rules" now. Obviously, flying over a state doesn't count. And I've decided not to count airports for connecting flights either. I'd prefer to set foot on the actual state, and not just drive through it, hence the asterisks on two of the states. I'm not sure my family ever got out of the car when we went through parts of Wyoming from Colorado to Wyoming. And I know i've only driven through Indiana. Heh, what I should do is make it so I have to visit a museum while in the state. I wonder if I could do it before forty…

Oh yeah, I mention there that I'm going to Hawaii. My dad and I have been taking about it for a while now, and we finally booked tickets around Christmas. I'm a bit worried about my job situation, as in I'm worried that I'll get a job and they won't let me have off, but I figure that's the kind of problem I'd want to have. It's win-win! Well, cross that bridge IF I ever come to it. Going by last time, it could take as long as May to find a new job. Hopefully less and not more. But yeah, I'm pretty stoked about it, and I've started to look up things to do and see around where we'll be staying. We're staying a week on Kauai and then a couple days on Oahu. Would like to have longer on Oahu, but eh, I'm happy to be going at all. Now I just need to find a way to Alaska, and I'll have the freak states out of the way….

year five, the not too distant future, meta
