She finds Zoe outside the garden, weeping. She’s lying curled in the grass, small and half hidden by the shadows of the garden wall, like the sun disappearing over the horizon.
Artemis lies down with her in the long, sweet grass and embraces her, and whispers to her as the last light spills red and faint across the sea. He left, but this is not the end. And in the goddess’s arms, Zoe’s tears dry, and her shoulders stop shaking.
When Artemis stands, she offers a hand to the girl in the grass. Zoe takes it gladly, and follows the goddess into the moonlight.

For the first years, she weary whenever they make camp, worn out as she calls the wolves to the tents and slips under her blanket. But she realizes, early on, that when her mind and body are busy following the goddess, she has no time to think of the fair-haired hero, or of the garden or her sisters.
By the time she adjusts to the life of the Hunt, she has eyes only for the movements of the moon, and hardly thinks of her old life at all.
iii.
The Hunt travels with Olympus, moving ever westward. But after Rome, the Hunt shrinks. The Olympians linger in the curiosities and passions of the West, but there are few girls who call out to Artemis, who seek to join the Hunt. And one by one, the nymphs of Artemis’s original Hunt disappear, until one day, Zoe finds herself wearing the silver circlet of the first lieutenant.
When new girls do join the Hunt, Zoe is there for them, helping them transition to life with the goddess. She does care for them - all the hundreds who pass through the Hunt - but her fiercest, deepest loyalty is to Artemis. As exhilarating as the Hunt may be, Zoe is happiest when their band has set up camp, when she lies close to Artemis and they watch the moon moving westward.
iv.
In her four thousand years, Zoe has heard her fair share of prophecies. Hearing the Oracle’s words, and knowing their quarry, she knows what she is traveling towards.
But, she thinks, holding Bianca di Angelo in the back seat, she is traveling towards Artemis. And that gives her the same infinite peacefulness she felt in the goddess’s arms outside the Garden of the Hesperides, all those years ago. She pulls Bianca a little closer, and watches out the window as their train chases the moon across the plains.
v.
When Thalia looks up at the sky, she wonders if her eyes are playing tricks on her, or if her sight has really gotten that much better since she joined the Hunt. It’s midwinter exactly; the newest constellation is at its closest to the moon; and Thalia could swear that she saw Zoe smiling as she followed the moon over the skies.
