Song Of The Day

Ben Folds was amazing last night as always. He played until the very last minute, didn't even stop for a break or to go off for the obligatory encore. In fact, he wanted to end with Not The Same, started teaching the crowd the little harmony part when the guy in charge came out and told him if he didn't end the show in 2 minutes it was going to cost him a $10,000 fine. We all were pissed, but he taught everyone the parts, jumped up on the piano and conducted us for a minute before walking off the stage. Awesome -- no other word.

The opening band was The Fray, they were pretty good as well. Isaac, the singer/pianist just proposed to his girlfriend on Sunday atop the Empire State Building, so of course the evening held a few dedications, one of them being from Ben solo on the piano. So I've thought about starting a little feature wherein I post the lyrics of one of my favorite songs everyday which is meaningful in some way. Since I seem to have an inordinate amount of friends with pending nuptials, I have chosen today Ben's dedication to Isaac and his fiancee from last night. I submit to you one of the loveliest, albeit slightly unconventional couple songs ever written. In fact, I need to come up with something to sing at Tara and Nate's wedding, I think this might make the short list (although I suspect it'll get trumped by Gershwin which is my favorite and somewhat singable a capella if need be).

The Luckiest
Ben Folds

I don't get many things right the first time
In fact, I am told that a lot
Now I know all the wrong turns, the stumbles and falls
Brought me here

And where was I before the day
That I first saw your lovely face?
Now I see it everyday
And I know

That I am
I am
I am
The luckiest

What if I'd been born fifty years before you
In a house on a street where you lived?
Maybe I'd be outside as you passed on your bike
Would I know?

And in a white sea of eyes
I see one pair that I recognize
And I know

That I am
I am
I am
The luckiest

I love you more than I have ever found a way to say to you

Next door there's an old man who lived to his nineties
And one day passed away in his sleep
And his wife; she stayed for a couple of days
And passed away

I'm sorry, I know that's a strange way to tell you that I know we belong
That I know

That I am
I am
I am
The luckiest
