This and That

Christmas was good, my sister made a super-surprise visit all the way from Florida. I didn't get anything interesting, just $.

Andy and I went to the U.K. from December 28th to January 10th. I kept a journal of sorts, but I haven't typed it all out yet. I'll post it behind a cut at some point soon. Maybe with pictures if I'm feeling inspired.

Current books:
Earth: The Book (Daily Show) - Bathroom reading material.

The Machine of Death edited by Ryan North (of Dinosaur Comics) - The plot idea came from a green t-rex born millions of years ago or a webcomic strip. It's an anthology of stories about a world where there exists a machine, that when given a blood sample will reveal with 100% infallible accuracy how that person will die. Of course there is ambiguity: Old Age means you could die at 90, or a senior could beat you to death with a cane. Then you get weird deaths like, "Vegetable" or "Flaming Marshmellow" (the story titles don't always correlate to the protagonist of that story).

Murder Mysteries (Neil Gaiman) - (graphic novel form) - The short story is in one of his anthologies, but I liked it enough I thought I should have it in another format.

Side Jobs (Jim Butcher) - I haven't read it yet. I read all of the other Dresden Files books and this was 50% off.

Chronicles of the Black Company (Glen Cook) - I've read 1/3 of the component books. Fantasy. It's very dark, which is a good thing.

My dad is having surgery this weekend, and I'm avoiding thinking about the subject. I've got too many things going on next week to be with him during the recovery, and I feel bad about it.

Monday I have an appointment to have my eyes tested in-depth to make sure there won't be any problems for Lasik surgery on the Friday. I'm blowing far too much money (mine and Andy's) on this, but sometimes you gotta do something for yourself right? I'm confident the procedure won't leave me blind, but we'll see how it goes. Yes, I know glasses are chic now, but I can't rely on them to bring in the boys. (ha-ha)
