I've got an idea. How about those people who are denied the right to marry and extend benefits to their significant others just don't pay any more state taxes? How can you tax someone who does not receive the same benefits that every other (hetero) taxpayer receives? I think this

I have found, in talking to people who strongly oppose gay marriage, that it's rarely a money issue. For instance, most conservatives will argue against socialism and that's the real basis for their opposition. Basically, they don't want to contribute funds to extend benefits to more 'minorities' than they already do. Consequently, these people don't support outreach, welfare, universal healthcare, etc. I think in most cases this is a selfish outlook, but to some extent, I can see their point. I don't necessarily agree with it, but I understand their reasoning.

No, most people who oppose gay marriage are against the ceremonial aspect of it. They will say that they don't mind allowing 'civil unions' - which carry the benefits that gay couples want and deserve - but that they're reluctant to call the union a marriage, since that's not what it is. I reserve a very special sort of irritation for these assholes, because it's these people who are so self-righteous as to think themselves more deserving of love and acceptance than the people who are different than they are.

I guess anything that makes you feel you are a unique and special snowflake is enough to make some people follow blindly?
