Ogata Ken passed away at the age of 71 on October 5th. According to related people, he had been in poor health lately.
Ogata Ken's sons held a press conference in Tokyo after his funeral and revealed that Ogata Ken had chronic hepatitis
and about 5 years ago, it turned into Liver cancer. He passed away due to bleeding from a ruptured liver as a result of Liver Cancer.
Ogata Ken still looked fine when he appeared at the press conference for the drama "Garden of the Wind" on the 30th September.
Ogata Ken is a brilliant actor who co-acted with Gackt in the Taiga Drama, Fuurin Kazan.

5日朝の手術の経過も良く!
一時はお医者さんも、もう一度復帰出来るかも知れないと、期待をかけて下さったが、
午後になって又容態が急変し、とうとう危篤との知らせが入り、急きょ仕事をキャンセルして病院に着いたのが、5日19時頃、
ベッドの上のガタは、嬉しそうに手を出してきてくれたので、
『仕事!全部終わったのかい』と聞いたら
『終わったよ!』と言うから、『流石のモンスターも、仕事が終わったから気が抜けたな?』といったら『そう!』と素直に頷いて、ちょっと起きると言って、ベッドに座り直したが、やはり、辛くてすぐに横になった!
元気そうに見せたかったんだろう!
でも、声は大きくて元気だったから!色んな話をしをしたが、
一番気にしてくれてたのは、僕の第3作目の『旭山動物園物語』の出演を、約束してたのに、他の仕事のスケジュールで、断ったことらしく、初号試写の時に は、忙しい合間を縫って見に来てくれたが、『監督さん、あれはホントに面白かった』と何度も励ましてくれ、『市長役をやった、万田久子が良かった』とも、 誉めてくれた!
『あの出来なら『次郎長三國志』も、さぞ良かったろう!見たかったな!貴一の次郎長ははどうだった』と聞くから、俺は主演男優賞を上げたいくらいだといったら、富良野の仕事の話しになって、
『おい!この貴一もき素晴らしいぞ』と感心してくれていたのが、うれしかった!
話しの最後に、俺の手を握りながら
『お前身体大事にしろよ!良い映画沢山創ってくれよな!治ったら、うなぎ喰いに行こうな、白焼きをな』と冗談交えて、医者に危篤を宣言されてる患者とは思 えない、明るい台詞を残して、その4時間後には、歌舞伎役者のように、虚空を睨み付けながら、静かに、静かに、息を引き取った!実に安らかに、全く苦しむ 様子も見せず、
名優らしい!カッコいい!立派な最後だった!俺もあんな死に方したいと、本気で思えた!臨終に間に合い、話が出来てつくづく良かったと思ってる!

On the night of the 4th, (Ogata) was admitted into DOKKYO University School of Medicine
and the surgery on the morning of the 5th progressed smoothly!
He had been pinning his hopes on when the doctor might be able to return again
but as afternoon came his condition took a sudden turn (for the worse), and I received notification of Ogata going into critical condition, so I urgently cancelled my work and arrived at the hospital at about 19:00hours on the 5th.
When Gata (he called Ogata-san, "Gata" in here) who was lying on the bed gladly reached his hand out towards me asked, "Work! Everything's wrapped up, yes?", I replied "It's all done!" and so I asked if "Even the adept monster loses his zest when work has ended", to which he said frankly "yup!" and with a nod he said he would get up in a bit. He sat upright on his bed, but it was too painful for him after all and he quickly laid back down.
I guess he wanted to seem healthy for me!
However, his voice was loud and fine! Although we talked about various things, the one matter that he was most concerned about was this: Ogata had to break his agreement of acting in my 3rd work 『旭山動物園物語』 because of the schedules of his other works, and during the first private screening he squeezed out some time admist his busy schedule to attend and he gave me encouragement many times over, "Mr Director, it was truly interesting" and he also praised, "Hisako Manda who did the role of a mayor was also good"!
『あの出来なら『次郎長三國志』も、さぞ良かったろう!見たかったな!貴一の次郎長ははどうだった』と聞くから、俺は主演男優賞を上げたいくらいだといったら、富良野の仕事の話しになって、
『おい!この貴一もき素晴らしいぞ』と感心してくれていたのが、うれしかった! (these are Ogata praising Masahiko-san on his work)
Towards the end of our conversation, he grasped my hand and jested, "You must take good care of your body (lit: Make your body an important matter)! And create many more great movies! When I recover, let's go to eat Unagi, grilled without seasoning." It doesn't seem like he's a patient whom the doctor declared to be in critical condition. He left behind such cheerful words, and 4 hours later, like a Kabuki actor, while glaring into an empty space, quietly... quietly...he drew in his final breath. (He left) really peacefully, there was absolutely no signs of pain or suffering.
Just like a great actor! So Cool! It was a splendid ending. I truly feel that I would also like to leave that way! I feel its amazing that (I was) able to make it in time before he left, and to be able to talk with him.

Ogata, whose real first name was Akinobu, was best known for his distinctive acting in the films "Kichiku" ("The Damon", 1978) and "Narayama Bushiko" ("The Ballad of Narayama", 1983) that won the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival. Ogata received the Mainichi Film Award for best actor for his roles in both films.
Born in Tokyo, Ogata joined a theatrical group in 1958 and made his screen debut in the 1960 film "Toi Hitotsu no Michi" (One Long Road). In 1965, he became famous for his starring role as warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi in NHK's period drama "Taikoki."
Ogata showed no signs of illness when he attended a press conference on Tuesday last week for the serial TV drama "Kaze no Gaden" (Garden of The Wind) which will start this week.
Ogata's private funeral was held among his close relatives on Tuesday. His first and second sons, Kanta and Naoto, both 41, are also actors.

緒形拳さん死去：家族にみとられ逝く ５年前、肝がんに [link]
５日に７１歳で死去した俳優、緒形拳（おがたけん）さんの長男幹太さん（４１）と次男直人さん（４１）が７日の葬儀後、東京都内で記者会見した。 緒形さんは、以前から患っていた慢性肝炎が約５年前、肝がんに移行。それでも元気にしていたが、４日夕に不調を訴えて入院したという。
緒形さんは病院で妻典江さん、ともに俳優の幹太さん、直人さんらにみとられながら、５日午後１１時５３分に息をひきとった。葬儀の喪主は典江（のりえ）さん。お別れの会を後日開く。
直人さんは「（出演ドラマの制作発表があった）先月３０日までは気合を入れて頑張っていた。最後までかっこいい、温かい男だった」と語った。

Veteran actor Ogata Ken died on Sunday, it was revealed yesterday. He was 71. He was widely regarded as one of Japan's finest actors, whose dedication to his craft brought out the best in younger cast members. Real name Ogata Akinobu, the Tokyo native joined the now defunct Shinkokugeki theater group in 1958 and studied under Tatsumi Ryutaro (1905-89). He later married fellow member Takakura Norie and their two sons, Kanta and Naoto, are both actors. Ogata achieved fame on TV when he played the lead role of medieval warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi in the 1965 NHK taiga drama series "Taikouki." In 1972-73 he played the lead role of a ninja assassin in the TBS period drama series "Hissatsu Shikakenin," which led to many other "Hissatsu" spinoffs. A unique and versatile actor, he appeared in countless TV series and more than 60 movies. The best known of Ogata's films include Nomura Yoshitaro's "Kichiku," Imamura Shohei's "Narayama Bushiko" (The Ballad of Narayama, 1983) and the 2006 Yamada Yoji samurai drama "Bushi no Ichibun" (Love and Honor). Not only a star of Japanese cinema he also appeared in several overseas productions, including Paul Schrader's "Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters" (1985) and Peter Greenaway's "The Pillow Book" (1996). Recent projects included the Japanese dub of "The Golden Compass" and last year's manga adaptation "Gegege no Kitaro - Sennen Noroiuta". He will appear in the Fuji TV drama series "Kaze no Garden," which airs from October 9, and he attended a post-production event for the series at the end of September. Although our ages differed by only 1 year, we took on the roles of mother and son. During the filming of the movie,
Ogata-san will always call me "Okkaa" (Okaa-san = mother). Right now I'm feeling: "Why is it that you, my "son",
passes on earlier than I do?". Ogata Ken doesn't act... instead, he melts right into the story, he certainly is a professional.
About 10 days ago, I received a postcard from Ogata about a drama that he himself is acting in.

注目を集めたのは６５年のＮＨＫ大河ドラマ「太閤記」。テレビドラマ「必殺仕掛人」の梅安役で人気を集め、映画でもシリーズ化。７４年の映画「砂 の器」では助演ながら、ドラマのカギとなる巡査役を好演。７７年の映画「八甲田山」で冬の行軍を生き延びる伍長役で評価を確立した。さらに７８年の「鬼 畜」で毎日映画コンクール男優主演賞など、俳優賞を独占。７９年「復讐するは我にあり」で主演して、殺人犯を鬼気迫る迫力で熱演した。８３年の「楢山節 考」では、年老いた母親を山中に捨てる息子の苦悩をリアルに演じて、再び毎日映画コンクール男優主演賞などを受賞。今村昌平、野村芳太郎監督らの社会派作 品に、なくてはならない存在となった。

◇「何で『息子』のお前が先に逝くの」
映画「楢山節考」で母親役を演じた女優の坂本スミ子さんの話 本当は１歳しか違わないのに、親子役をやりました。映画の撮影中、緒形さんはずっと 私を「おっかあ」と呼んでいました。「なんで息子のお前が先に逝くんだよ」という気持ちです。緒形さんは演技ではなく、ストーリーに溶け込んでなるがまま に表現し、まさにプロフェッショナルな方でした。１０日ほど前に、緒形さんから自身が出演したドラマを紹介するはがきが届いたばかり。会いたいなと思って いたのに本当に残念です。

人間の生と死をテーマにしたこの作品は、９月２８日にすべての収録が終わったばかり。緒形さんの息子役で共演した中井貴一さんは、ラストシーンを「僕も精根尽き果てる感じでふらふらでしたが、緒形さんも立ち上がれないほどだった」と振り返っていた。

新国劇を経て、映画やドラマ、ＣＭなどで幅広く活躍した俳優の緒形拳（おがた・けん、本名明伸＝あきのぶ）さんが５日、死去した。７１歳だった。死因は 不明。横浜市鶴見区の自宅で親族がスポニチ本紙の取材に明かしたもので「（７日の）密葬が終わったら正式に発表します」と答えた。新国劇の舞台ほか、「カ ンヌ映画祭」で最高賞に輝いた「楢山節考」など代表作は数知れず。昭和の名優が慌ただしく逝った。
突然の悲報だった。６日夜、東京・新宿区内の斎場で親族だけで通夜がしめやかに営まれた。緒形さんの姉が横浜の自宅に戻ったところでスポニチ本紙の取材に応じ「きのう（５日）亡くなりました。葬儀が終わった後に正式に発表させていただきます」と答えた。
１０月９日スタートのフジの連続ドラマ「風のガーデン」が遺作となってしまった。先月３０日に都内で行われた会見にも元気な姿を見せ、主演の中井貴一 （４７）を絶賛。「代表作になるよ」と太鼓判を押していた。食べ物を中心に毎日のように更新するブログでも同日「是非是非ご覧下さい」とアピールしたが、 これが最後の更新となった。
緒形さんは５８年に新国劇に入団。付き人となった辰巳柳太郎さんのもとで修業を積み、めきめきと頭角を現した。創設者の沢田正二郎が唱えた「半歩前進主 義」を指標にし、「極付・国定忠治」や「関の弥太っぺ」「大菩薩峠」などの舞台で活躍。６５年にＮＨＫ大河ドラマ「太閤記」の秀吉役で注目を集め、テレビ 朝日系「必殺仕掛人」の藤枝梅安役も人気を呼んだ。その後はスクリーンでも実力を発揮。「鬼畜」「楢山節考」「復讐するは我にあり」といった作品で、国内 外にその名演ぶりをとどろかせた。
一時はポール・シュレーダー監督作「ＭＩＳＨＩＭＡ」など外国映画への出演も増えたが、９７年に亡くなった勝新太郎さんが「道草しちゃだめだよ」と忠告し、その後、軸足を日本映画に戻したのは有名な話だ。
書家としても知られた才人だった。９１年には初個展を開催し、「臍下丹田（せいかたんでん）」という本も出版して話題を呼んだ。タイトルについて「臍（へそ）の下、下っ腹を指す言葉で、命だな。人間の命みたいなものだ」と本紙の取材に強調したこともあった。
仕事に入ると、妥協は許さなかったが、サービス精神旺盛な一面もあった。旧ソ連で撮影が行われた「おろしや国酔夢譚」では、イルクーツクの日本人墓地を自らガイド役になって取材陣を案内する一幕もあった。

but as afternoon came his condition took a sudden turn (for the worse), and I received notification of Ogata going into critical condition, so I urgently cancelled my work and arrived at the hospital at about 19:00hours on the 5th.
When Gata (he called Ogata-san, "Gata" in here) who was lying on the bed gladly reached his hand out towards me asked, "Work! Everything's wrapped up, yes?", I replied "It's all done!" and so I asked if "Even the adept monster loses his zest when work has ended", to which he said frankly "yup!" and with a nod he said he would get up in a bit. He sat upright on his bed, but it was too painful for him after all and he quickly laid back down.
I guess he wanted to seem healthy for me!
However, his voice was loud and fine! Although we talked about various things, the one matter that he was most concerned about was this: Ogata had to break his agreement of acting in my 3rd work 『旭山動物園物語』 because of the schedules of his other works, and during the first private screening he squeezed out some time admist his busy schedule to attend and he gave me encouragement many times over, "Mr Director, it was truly interesting" and he also praised, "Hisako Manda who did the role of a mayor was also good"!
『あの出来なら『次郎長三國志』も、さぞ良かったろう!見たかったな!貴一の次郎長ははどうだった』と聞くから、俺は主演男優賞を上げたいくらいだといったら、富良野の仕事の話しになって、
『おい!この貴一もき素晴らしいぞ』と感心してくれていたのが、うれしかった! (these are Ogata praising Masahiko-san on his work)
Towards the end of our conversation, he grasped my hand and jested, "You must take good care of your body (lit: Make your body an important matter)! And create many more great movies! When I recover, let's go to eat Unagi, grilled without seasoning." It doesn't seem like he's a patient whom the doctor declared to be in critical condition. He left behind such cheerful words, and 4 hours later, like a Kabuki actor, while glaring into an empty space, quietly... quietly...he drew in his final breath. (He left) really peacefully, there was absolutely no signs of pain or suffering.
Just like a great actor! So Cool! It was a splendid ending. I truly feel that I would also like to leave that way! I feel its amazing that (I was) able to make it in time before he left, and to be able to talk with him.

Actor Ken Ogata dies at 71

Ogata, whose real first name was Akinobu, was best known for his distinctive acting in the films "Kichiku" ("The Damon", 1978) and "Narayama Bushiko" ("The Ballad of Narayama", 1983) that won the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival. Ogata received the Mainichi Film Award for best actor for his roles in both films.
Born in Tokyo, Ogata joined a theatrical group in 1958 and made his screen debut in the 1960 film "Toi Hitotsu no Michi" (One Long Road). In 1965, he became famous for his starring role as warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi in NHK's period drama "Taikoki."
Ogata showed no signs of illness when he attended a press conference on Tuesday last week for the serial TV drama "Kaze no Gaden" (Garden of The Wind) which will start this week.
Ogata's private funeral was held among his close relatives on Tuesday. His first and second sons, Kanta and Naoto, both 41, are also actors.

緒形拳さん死去：家族にみとられ逝く ５年前、肝がんに [link]
５日に７１歳で死去した俳優、緒形拳（おがたけん）さんの長男幹太さん（４１）と次男直人さん（４１）が７日の葬儀後、東京都内で記者会見した。 緒形さんは、以前から患っていた慢性肝炎が約５年前、肝がんに移行。それでも元気にしていたが、４日夕に不調を訴えて入院したという。
緒形さんは病院で妻典江さん、ともに俳優の幹太さん、直人さんらにみとられながら、５日午後１１時５３分に息をひきとった。葬儀の喪主は典江（のりえ）さん。お別れの会を後日開く。
直人さんは「（出演ドラマの制作発表があった）先月３０日までは気合を入れて頑張っていた。最後までかっこいい、温かい男だった」と語った。

２人の説明によると、拳さんは、８年前に肝硬変になり、４～５年前に肝臓がんに移行。４日夕、拳さんが「（体調が）おかしい」と言うので、病院に 行って肝臓が破裂していることが判明した。５日午後１１時５３分に、妻、子供、孫と俳優仲間で親友の津川雅彦さんにみとられ、眠るように亡くなったとい う。
幹太さんは「一家の大黒柱だった。家ではすごく家族を大事にしてくれた」と振り返った。また、直人さんは生前、「（病気のことがあり）気が気じゃ なかった」と体のことを心配していたという。亡くなって「父の存在は、あまりにもでかい存在だった。俳優としても、父としても尊敬している」と憔悴（しょ うすい）した様子で話した。
典江夫人が喪主となって親近者のみで行われた密葬の祭壇には拳さんが生前記した「雪月花」や「不借身命」などの書が飾られた。戒名は「天照院普遍 日拳居士」。遺影は０６年２月に出版した「緒形拳を追いかけて」（垣井道弘著・ぴあ）の表紙写真が使われたという。後日、「しのぶ会」を開く予定。【細田 尚子】

Ogata Ken Dies at 71

Veteran actor Ogata Ken died on Sunday, it was revealed yesterday. He was 71. He was widely regarded as one of Japan's finest actors, whose dedication to his craft brought out the best in younger cast members. Real name Ogata Akinobu, the Tokyo native joined the now defunct Shinkokugeki theater group in 1958 and studied under Tatsumi Ryutaro (1905-89). He later married fellow member Takakura Norie and their two sons, Kanta and Naoto, are both actors. Ogata achieved fame on TV when he played the lead role of medieval warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi in the 1965 NHK taiga drama series "Taikouki." In 1972-73 he played the lead role of a ninja assassin in the TBS period drama series "Hissatsu Shikakenin," which led to many other "Hissatsu" spinoffs. A unique and versatile actor, he appeared in countless TV series and more than 60 movies. The best known of Ogata's films include Nomura Yoshitaro's "Kichiku," Imamura Shohei's "Narayama Bushiko" (The Ballad of Narayama, 1983) and the 2006 Yamada Yoji samurai drama "Bushi no Ichibun" (Love and Honor). Not only a star of Japanese cinema he also appeared in several overseas productions, including Paul Schrader's "Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters" (1985) and Peter Greenaway's "The Pillow Book" (1996). Recent projects included the Japanese dub of "The Golden Compass" and last year's manga adaptation "Gegege no Kitaro - Sennen Noroiuta". He will appear in the Fuji TV drama series "Kaze no Garden," which airs from October 9, and he attended a post-production event for the series at the end of September. Co-star Nakai Kiichi said of filming the final scene together, "It left me exhausted and feint, but Ogata-san put so much into it he couldn't even stand."

These are the words of Sumi Sakamoto, an actress who acted as Ogata Ken's Mother in the movie "Ballad of Narayama".
Although our ages differed by only 1 year, we took on the roles of mother and son. During the filming of the movie,
Ogata-san will always call me "Okkaa" (Okaa-san = mother). Right now I'm feeling: "Why is it that you, my "son",
passes on earlier than I do?". Ogata Ken doesn't act... instead, he melts right into the story, he certainly is a professional.
About 10 days ago, I received a postcard from Ogata about a drama that he himself is acting in.
I really wanted to meet up with him, its truly regrettable.

「楢山節考」「陽暉楼」「魚影の群」で１９８３年度毎日映画コンクール男優主演賞を受賞した緒形拳さん＝１９８４年１月撮影 骨太でリアルな演技で知られた緒形拳さんが、亡くなった。デビュー当時から映画、舞台の一線で活躍が続き、日本を代表する実力派俳優だった。
緒形さんは、高校時代に新国劇の辰巳柳太郎さんの舞台を見たことで、俳優になることを決意した。卒業後アルバイトをしながら新国劇に入団。入団２ 年の６０年「遠い一つの道」の新人ボクサー役で舞台でデビュー、同年この映画化でスクリーンデビューを飾った。男くさい、精力的な演技が評価され、仕事の 自由を確保したいと同劇団を退団。テレビ、映画に活躍の舞台を移した。
注目を集めたのは６５年のＮＨＫ大河ドラマ「太閤記」。テレビドラマ「必殺仕掛人」の梅安役で人気を集め、映画でもシリーズ化。７４年の映画「砂 の器」では助演ながら、ドラマのカギとなる巡査役を好演。７７年の映画「八甲田山」で冬の行軍を生き延びる伍長役で評価を確立した。さらに７８年の「鬼 畜」で毎日映画コンクール男優主演賞など、俳優賞を独占。７９年「復讐するは我にあり」で主演して、殺人犯を鬼気迫る迫力で熱演した。８３年の「楢山節 考」では、年老いた母親を山中に捨てる息子の苦悩をリアルに演じて、再び毎日映画コンクール男優主演賞などを受賞。今村昌平、野村芳太郎監督らの社会派作 品に、なくてはならない存在となった。
一方で舞台でも、「王将」を７７年から全国縦断公演するなど、数々の名演を残した。
納得できない作品には出演を拒否するなど硬骨漢としても知られ、新人を支援したいと低予算の映画にも積極的に出演。９９年「あつもの」などは、海外の映画祭で評価された。
近年も舞台、テレビ、映画での活躍は続き、３０日にもテレビドラマ「風のガーデン」の制作発表に参加したばかりだった。【勝田友巳】
◇内側に感情詰まり、力あふれる俳優
▽映画評論家の佐藤忠男さんの話 非常にエネルギッシュでユーモアを込めて役を演じる得がたい存在だったと言える。特に「楢山節考」や「復讐する は我にあり」は、ずば抜けていい演技。復興を果たした戦後日本を表すように、しゃにむに突進し、とことんやる日本人の姿を体現した俳優だった。現在でもう まい俳優はいるが、内側に感情が詰まり、力があふれる俳優はざらにはいない。
◇ものすごく幅の広い役者
▽緒形さんが日本アカデミー賞優秀主演男優賞を受賞した映画「復讐するは我にあり」の原作者で直木賞作家の佐木隆三さんの話 同じ１９３７年生ま れ。それをよく話題にしたが、下積みが長い役者さんで「８人兄弟で貧乏しました」と口癖のように話していた。誰もが認めるすごい役者で、私の原作をいち早 く読んでは「こういう役をやりたかったんです」と言ってくれた。その時は本当にうれしかった。「復讐するは我にあり」では、そんな思いが通じ、素晴らしい 演技をしていただいた。面倒見のいい警察官から恐るべき殺人鬼までものすごく幅の広い役者だった。
◇「何で『息子』のお前が先に逝くの」
映画「楢山節考」で母親役を演じた女優の坂本スミ子さんの話 本当は１歳しか違わないのに、親子役をやりました。映画の撮影中、緒形さんはずっと 私を「おっかあ」と呼んでいました。「なんで息子のお前が先に逝くんだよ」という気持ちです。緒形さんは演技ではなく、ストーリーに溶け込んでなるがまま に表現し、まさにプロフェッショナルな方でした。１０日ほど前に、緒形さんから自身が出演したドラマを紹介するはがきが届いたばかり。会いたいなと思って いたのに本当に残念です。

２０００年１０月、紫綬褒章受章の喜びを語る緒形拳さん（共同） 死去した俳優の緒形拳さんは、最期まで演技への執念を燃やし続けた。終末医療に取り組む老医師を演じ、９日からフジテレビ系で放送される連続ドラマ「風のガーデン」が遺作となった。
人間の生と死をテーマにしたこの作品は、９月２８日にすべての収録が終わったばかり。緒形さんの息子役で共演した中井貴一さんは、ラストシーンを「僕も精根尽き果てる感じでふらふらでしたが、緒形さんも立ち上がれないほどだった」と振り返っていた。
その２日後、東京都内で開かれた「風のガーデン」の記者会見に緒形さんは出席。撮影の疲れもあってか、声にいつもの張りがなかった。作品について 問われると「いや応なく人って老いていくわけで、それで病になるわけで、そしていや応なく死が訪れるわけで…」と答える場面もあった。
それでも冗談を交えて会場を沸かせる気配りを示し「（春ごろから）玄米菜食に変えたんですが（白米の）すしだけは困ったなと思うんです」と、健康に配慮する様子も見せていた。

新国劇を経て、映画やドラマ、ＣＭなどで幅広く活躍した俳優の緒形拳（おがた・けん、本名明伸＝あきのぶ）さんが５日、死去した。７１歳だった。死因は 不明。横浜市鶴見区の自宅で親族がスポニチ本紙の取材に明かしたもので「（７日の）密葬が終わったら正式に発表します」と答えた。新国劇の舞台ほか、「カ ンヌ映画祭」で最高賞に輝いた「楢山節考」など代表作は数知れず。昭和の名優が慌ただしく逝った。
突然の悲報だった。６日夜、東京・新宿区内の斎場で親族だけで通夜がしめやかに営まれた。緒形さんの姉が横浜の自宅に戻ったところでスポニチ本紙の取材に応じ「きのう（５日）亡くなりました。葬儀が終わった後に正式に発表させていただきます」と答えた。
１０月９日スタートのフジの連続ドラマ「風のガーデン」が遺作となってしまった。先月３０日に都内で行われた会見にも元気な姿を見せ、主演の中井貴一 （４７）を絶賛。「代表作になるよ」と太鼓判を押していた。食べ物を中心に毎日のように更新するブログでも同日「是非是非ご覧下さい」とアピールしたが、 これが最後の更新となった。
緒形さんは５８年に新国劇に入団。付き人となった辰巳柳太郎さんのもとで修業を積み、めきめきと頭角を現した。創設者の沢田正二郎が唱えた「半歩前進主 義」を指標にし、「極付・国定忠治」や「関の弥太っぺ」「大菩薩峠」などの舞台で活躍。６５年にＮＨＫ大河ドラマ「太閤記」の秀吉役で注目を集め、テレビ 朝日系「必殺仕掛人」の藤枝梅安役も人気を呼んだ。その後はスクリーンでも実力を発揮。「鬼畜」「楢山節考」「復讐するは我にあり」といった作品で、国内 外にその名演ぶりをとどろかせた。
一時はポール・シュレーダー監督作「ＭＩＳＨＩＭＡ」など外国映画への出演も増えたが、９７年に亡くなった勝新太郎さんが「道草しちゃだめだよ」と忠告し、その後、軸足を日本映画に戻したのは有名な話だ。
書家としても知られた才人だった。９１年には初個展を開催し、「臍下丹田（せいかたんでん）」という本も出版して話題を呼んだ。タイトルについて「臍（へそ）の下、下っ腹を指す言葉で、命だな。人間の命みたいなものだ」と本紙の取材に強調したこともあった。
仕事に入ると、妥協は許さなかったが、サービス精神旺盛な一面もあった。旧ソ連で撮影が行われた「おろしや国酔夢譚」では、イルクーツクの日本人墓地を自らガイド役になって取材陣を案内する一幕もあった。
２人の息子、幹太（４１）と年子の直人（４１）はともに父の後を追って俳優の道に進んだが、関係者によれば、子供というよりもライバルとして見ていたという。それほど仕事に関してはプロ意識に徹した人だった。 【タレント名鑑・緒形拳】
