What follows is criticism about my scheduling, and it may be kinda boring, so skip it if you wish. :)
As many of you know, my new job (working front desk for Sproul hall at UCLA) requires me to work shifts that could be either 12-3AM, 3-6AM, or 6-9AM (that last one I think would be the worst...and I have to work it on Wednesday. Well, actually, I'm working 6AM-12PM which is even worse, but whatever..hehe) Anyways, I really don't actually mind these shifts too much, especially during the summer when all I'm doing is working and going out. In fact, these are the shifts where basically nothing happens, so I can just sit here and play online games, write emails and update my live journal, as I've done today. What I don't appreciate is that I'm going to get off work at 6AM, and then I'm scheduled to work again at 10AM, which obviously, means I'll get like 3 hours of sleep (plus the two that I got before my shift, but still.) I just looked at the schedule and I noticed that there's only one guy who is in a remotely similar situation, but he's working the 12-3 shift and doesn't have work until 11:30, so he'll get far more sleep than I will. I don't think this is some sort of personal scheduling attack or anything, I just think that it was somewhat inconsiderate of the supervisor to basically ensure that I won't get any sleep tonight. The same thing happened during 10th week when they scheduled me for a 3-6AM shift the morning that I had a midterm that I told them about before hand. Thankfully, I got that one switched, because there was no way I was going to work before my final like that. Another thing about mid shifts (these early shifts) that bothers me now is that when we were at the Covel desk we didn't have access control people working as well, so there were always two deskers scheduled for mid shifts. But, now that they have access, they only schedule one desker, so I've been here by myself, basically, because the access control people are like 25 feet away, and they don't really socialize with front desk people. Its also annoying that they get to talk to each other and they've been watching Indiana Jones and Tomb Raider while I've been sitting here bored. And then, they leave at 5, but I'm here until 6, so literally for the last hour I've been completely by myself, and 5AM is still a creepy time to be alone. But, whatever, its not up to me. And then, speaking of being inconsiderate, I was scheduled to work until 1:30PM yesterday, which was perfect because the dining halls closed at 2, but they kept us for an extra hour which meant that we didn't get to eat here which I think was also unfair. With the way that they're paying us, they should realize that no one wants to have to go to Westwood and buy good when there is an option of food that we're already paying for. Its not like there's premier during the summer, if we miss a meal, we're out of luck. One last thing, that pretty much explains why we didn't complain when they kept us the extra hour today, is that they aren't giving us the number of hours we're requesting. They hired too many people here, and so when some of us have requested like 35 hours a week, they've been giving us only like 25.. which would be fine, except that we all need the money. So, its nice to have more free time, but its frustrating if we don't have money to spend during that free time. Okay...thats enough complaints.. Rant complete.
Okay, time to go to sleep, but I'll probably write more tomorrow thats NOT complaining.
