I figured most of it out and I'm certain that I can be in the Austin area for the week of SXSW, including bag stuffing on the Thursday night prior to that week.
I could obviously fly down, but going the the airport and dealing with that whole process now makes me cringe more than going to the dentist. Then there's the idea of driving down...
It would be atleast the same price as a plane ticket. If gas in March is relatively the same as it is now, roundtrip should cost me $250-$300. And that's being rather liberal. I can't remember what the exact mileage was on the way up here, but I estimated at 1600.
Bah. I just looked up plane ticket prices to compare and the cheapest one is $218. So now it's not cheaper to drive than to fly. I probably assumed the opposite because I was thinking of the cost of my tickets during winter break, but I booked those maybe 2 weeks in advance, as opposed to buying these 2 months in advance.
But then once I'm in Texas there's the problem of getting to Austin for my shifts. More specifically, stealing my mom's car all day for who knows how many days. Definitely spending a few nights in Austin since now that I'm legal I can take advantage of all of the open bars and parties downtown. There's also the cost of driving from Lockhart to Austin, but if I were to stay in Austin to save on gas, then I have to find a place to stay.
Now I'm thinking about just going to Austin during the fest but not working and just taking advantage of all of the parties and shows. That way I don't have to be in Austin for shifts or anything. Obviously I'll have to pay for stuff, then, but it'll still be crazy fun.
Aaaaaaalso, since I'll be an out-of-town volunteer, I can't do music production. I would probably do film instead, then, but it's not a big deal.
I'm coming home for spring break regardless of my sxsw plans (or lack of). Technically my spring break is the week after sxsw, but I also technically have 2 weeks for a break (March 14-30). I don't think that I'll be home for the entirety of it, though, otherwise I would go mad with boredom in Lockhart.
So, yes. I just spilled what's been cooking in my brain for past few hours. Now I need advice as to whether or not I should work sx this year.
