Grace

Today I went to a press performance of Grace which opens Monday (it's currently in previews). It was sold out but one of our critics didn't need both of his tickets and he returned one, so I got to see the show. And it. was. amazing. I heard several people complaining as they were leaving the theater that it was too wordy/there were too many monolgues (siiiiigggghhh), but most people (including me) were still crying.  I won't go too much into the plot since I'm not stupid enough to think that most of you actually care, suffice to say it was about a mother (Lynn Redgrave) who strongly believes that religion should be abolished, whose son decides to become a priest and is killed in some kind of religious skirmish (off-stage and not elaborated on more than to say that religion was part of it).  In the second to last scene she finally goes to his grave after two years to "clear her conscience."  You expect her to say "I'm sorry" or "I finally understand your point of view" or "please forgive me" but instead she screams "I think you got what you deserved!" and starts screaming and crying hysterically.  It gave me chills.

Lynn Redgrave was phenomenal.  I...there are no words.  Even if the show itself doesn't get great reviews (which I think it should) she definitely will.  Her performance was flawless, and personally I thought the whole show was brilliant.  It did a good job of showing both sides of the issue, not just hers.  Perhaps I wasn't as detered so much by the plethora of monologues because I was too busy being in awe of the acting skills up on that stage which I feel I may have a deeper appreciation for since I was acting and studying acting for most of my life before I decided I couldn't handle it anymore.  I can't even imagine having to go to whatever place she has to go to 8 times a week to dig up those emotions.  If I ever had the skill she has in her pinky finger I would consider myself lucky.

In conclusion, Grace gets an A+ rating from me, and if you live in NYC you should go and see it before it closes on March 8th.  (Also go see Hunting and Gathering.  A completely different show, but also excellent and very funny).

I continue to love my internship.
