I've been searching around Grove Music Online to try and gather information for my medieval music history exam, and whilst I haven't found anything useful I have found some things which are interesting.
"The Renaissance invented the Middle Ages in order to define itself; the Enlightenment perpetuated them in order to admire itself; and the Romantics revived them in order to escape from themselves. In their widest ramifications ‘The Middle Ages’ thus constitute one of the most prevalent cultural myths of the modern world." (Page, Christopher. "Medieval." Grove Music Online. Oxford Music Online. 5 Jun. 2008 ).
Also, did you know that the French Ars Nova (fourteenth-century music, sacred and secular but mostly secular survives) was unknown until around 1900?
