breakthrough!

I just had to get an entry in here to remind me of today.

I have been putting bits and pieces of my book together for over a year now but never felt like I just wanted to sit at my computer and let the words pour out. I have a bunch of chapters in rough points and broken sentences and that was all. It wasn't so much plain old writer's block. I had the story plan in mind. I just didn't have the itch to type away as I do right now.

I like to base my characters on real life people I know on a close personal level because I don't care anymore for chicklit and romance novels that have characters who you KNOW no way in hell exist in real life. Sure, they're a fun read but that's not the only point I want to make. Anyway, today I had a breakthrough with the main character development. I'm excited because she's based on me. It's funny that the person you're supposed to know the best, should be yourself. But when you realise things you never really thought of before, it's exciting.

I owe pretty much all of it to an LJ comment on one of my posts over a year ago that randomly popped into my head. All I can say is that it's time to crack open my childhood fairy tale hardcovers with their lovely illustrations to refresh my memory about the writings of Hans Christian Andersen and the Brothers Grimm. While Disney has created (or rather recreated and modified) many amazing movies, I feel that I and many others can relate more to the original versions of the classic fairy tales. While there are many happy beginnings and endings in real life, not everyone has sunset ballroom dances or knights on white horses. I hope to combine both the bitter and the sweet. In mixed and random orders of each other.

Back then, I may not have understood why some of Andersen's tales ended sadly or even scared me enough to sleep with the lights on. Some of you probably realized these things way before I did. But hey, I think I'm starting to learn and realise more now that I've had more time for me and it's fuckin awesome.

And by the way, I read the original story of the Little Mermaid way before I watched the Disney version. Well, what a shock I had at the end of that movie.
