As to why I have, and always will love Rex Stout (Nero Wolfe).
From Too Many Cooks, originally published 1938:
Wolfe grunted. "You said April 7th? That's today."
"Yeah, they must have flown. Formerly a figure of speech, now listed under common carriers."

Legend has it the man never really edited his work, either. He would sit for hours in front of the typewriter at times without typing, but when he did, he knew exactly what he wanted to say.
Not one of us could say that, today.
