seriously, valentine's day is overrated. i mean, why would the pragmatic, workaholic america want to celebrate cupid's day. it's stupid. but man, the candy and pink brought back the good ole times, so let's take a walk down memory lane.

six years ago, on feb 14th of 1999, i was in cozy classroom in Gower Elementary School in Nashville, TN. i just arrived in america a month before, and i could barely tell the difference between boy and girl. it was monday, and the friday before, ms.??? (tchaikovsky?? it was way too complicated for my charater brain) wrote everyone's name on the board so that the little fourth-graders can go home and have their parents write cards to each and everyone of their classmates. i didn't copy them down, because i had no idea what they were for. monday came, i expected another day lost among the jumble of letters and rednecks, instead what i found was a whole school decorated in red and pink. it was absolutely ridiculous. thought i went to the wrong place and ended up in a lover's lane, but it was my school. in the morning, most of the classes have been cancelled in light of the major holiday, i didn't really care. then what frightened me was the latter part of the day where each and everyone of my blond classmates got up and dropped little neatly folded valentine's cards at each and every one of the tables. i sat there, dumbfounded. after the cards it was the food, again, there were cupcakes, lolipops in the shape of a heart, cakes, candy, smarties, every kind of candy imaginable (america was rich back then, the gasoline as i remember costed about 78 cents). i was the only person sitting throughout this ordeal, and on my desk piled hordes of cards and tooth-aching food, i felt stupid and sad. i was disconnected with the world in every possible means. lost in a crowd of english letters. i hate valentine's day.
