I wonder why people read the Da Vinci Code like a factual history book... It was written as a fiction, sold as a fiction, and is found in bookstores in the fiction section. Maybe its because of the first page:
"All descriptions of artwork, architecture, documents, and secret rituals in this novel are accurate."
The author stated in an interview that "the documents, rituals, [etc] in the novel all exist. The 'FACT' page makes no statement whatsoever about any of the ancient theories discussed by fictional characters." Take note that he is contradicting himself, since on the "FACT" page, it says "all descriptions" of these things are true, not merely that they exist.
But as one of my friends said, its just a "fun read". Another friend also commented that "it was a fun book, although it's too easy to read like a history book, but it's fiction". If its just a fun fiction book, why is it of any issue?
According to a compilation of 3 surveys, there are tens of millions of people who believe Dan Brown's fiction to be purely factual. Brown claims that this book is not anti-Christian, which is a rather fantastic claim. He knows that when he wrote this book, taking note he claims much of the content to be true, that the book would draw people away from Chrisianity. There's no doubt that this book is directly anti-Christian, and stating different if foolish.
Why is it so convincing, though? It couldn't possibly just be the first page. I believe it has to do with the entertainment value of the book. People read it and are so drawn into the book, they don't take time to research on the claims of the book. They just read the first page, read on to the rest of the book, and accept it. Ironic, no? This book was written as fiction, though people will read it as fact. The Bible was written as to be factual, though people read it as fiction.
That's the issue. Christians are being attacked not superficially, but at the core of belief. Jesus is being attacked. That's why we can't just ignore it, stay away from it. That's why I can't ignore it. So I'm chosing to watch the movie and read (yes, I'm really going to read) the book. I'm going to be armed and ready whenever someone brings up the Da Vinci Code, and I'm going to get my friends ready for it as well.
I'm gonna decode the Da Vinci Code... the right way.
PS: Christians, arm yourselves. Athiests and others, open yourselves.
