Don't Get Snippy!

I do NOT appreciate people going into my server room after hours and cutting off the ends of my ethernet cables!!!!!

One of the staff took it upon herself to bypass me (the de-facto "Technology Coordinator") and arbitrarily ordered a new set of multi line phones from Best Buy (of all places). She was so proud of herself for this, ignoring the fact that we already have a fully functioning AT&T Partner Plus system in place. She just new she wanted a phone and wanted it now.

Did she consult me about whether it would be compatible with our system? No. Did she make sure that the phone model she was getting would accept a RJ45 plug? No.

So rather than admit that she made a mistake, she tried to fix it on her own by having a friend come in last night and play around with the cabling that I had just spent the last week sorting out. I had it all organized, rerouted, and neatly labeled. But what did they do? They unplugged random lines and *CUT* the nice long cat5 cable off of MY phone. They tried to stick an RJ11 mod on it to test if that would 'fix' things and work with the new phones. Obviously they were monkeying with stuff outside their knowledge and failed.

So this morning she finally came to me meekly asking for help with the phones. She was still congratulating herself for her efforts last night though, and even proudly held up the snipped off end of my cable to show what they had "accomplished" without my help. Did I mention I can't reterminate it yet because I'm still waiting for my RJ45 crimper and mods to come in the mail??

They invaded my sacred territory, castrated my only remaining long cat5 cable, and were pleased with themselves for it. I finally got frustrated, took a deep breath and told her, "You know, it's really not cool for you to just come in and go cutting my thing off." I was so flustered that was all I could manage to get out without using any of the technical jargon she says upsets her.

If she had simply come to me first, even ignoring the fact that she wasted over $500 on a rash purchase, I could have gotten her precious new toy working using the old existing line drops. I could have easily patching them in through the 66 block and bypassed the now wasted investment of the Partner system. After all that, this afternoon she FINALLY asked me to put together some info on how all this fancy "phone stuff" works so we can see if what she bought should be returned because it might not be the best long-term solution.

Moral: DON'T MESS WITH STUFF THAT AIN'T YOURS!
