alifeofourown Lip came in through the back, shrugging off his coat and putting it on the back of a kitchen chair. His head was pounding after a long day of tutoring. It didn’t pay as well as taking the SATs for people, but it was better than nothing. He rubbed his hands together to warm them up, and was poking through the fridge for something to drink when he noticed something.
Silence.
The house was silent.
“Is anybody home?” he called, waiting for an answer. There was none. His heart began to pound excitedly and suddenly, the last thing on his mind was his headache or the lack of money he had in his pocket. No, that wouldn’t matter now.
He slammed the fridge door shut, grabbed his coat and went out the door. He walked as quickly as he could down to Kash’s store, walking in.
“Kash,” he said simply, ignoring the twinge of resentment he always had for the man. “Where’s Ian?”
“In the back, doing inventory,” Kash said, wiping down the front counter.
“There’s an emergency, is there any chance I can get him out of here early?” Lip asked, glad the cold made his cheeks flush and he made his voice exasperated, making him look desperate.
“Of course. Is everyone okay?” Kash asked as Lip made a beeline for the store room.
“Hopefully,” he said, looking back over his shoulder and pushing the door open. Ian was looking at the small shelves of things, obviously tallying them up.
“Get your coat, Ian, we’re going home.”
“Shit!” Ian exclaimed, jumping a little and looking over at Lip. “You fucking scared me. And what do you mean? I’m working.”
“I told Kash there’s an emergency, so get your coat, and rush out with me.” Lip grabbed Ian’s coat off the hanger and tossed it to him.
“Why do you want me off of work?” Ian asked, even though he was pulling on his coat and taking off his apron.
“Will you stop asking questions?” Lip asked, shoving his hands in his pockets, walking out quickly. He heard Ian’s footsteps behind him, and he left without saying goodbye to Kash, even though he heard him say some sort of goodbye. His mind was racing. He hoped the house was still empty when they got back, or else this would be all for not.
“Remember how I told you all I got you for your birthday was some pot and some boot polish for your ROTC stuff?” Lip asked, looking over at Ian. Ian nodded a little. “Well, I lied.”
“Really? What the hell, Lip? My birthday was like, two weeks ago. Why now?” Ian asked, biting his lip a little.
“I was waiting for the right time. It’s now or never, so let’s pick up the pace.” Lip walked a bit faster towards their house.
Once they were there, standing in the middle of the living room, Lip pointed Ian towards the couch. “Sit, stay, good Ian.”
“Um…okay,” he said, sitting down, a smile of anticipation breaking onto his face.
Lip ran up to their room and fished into his pillow case, where he kept a few things that he wanted to keep to himself. He pulled out two small, rectangular packages wrapped in the Comics section from the Newspaper-probably one that Debbie nabbed. He went down the steps and sat down right next to Ian, their knees touching.
“Happy birthday, love,” Lip said gently, in a voice he used with no one else. “I hope you like it.”
“Lip,” Ian whispered, taking the gifts, smiling up at his brother. “I’ll like it no matter what.” And then he opened the smaller one on top, smiling a little and laughing a bit. “A candy bar?”
“It sort of goes with the next one. Besides, who doesn’t love chocolate?” Lip asked with a small shrug.
“That’s very true,” Ian said, putting the candy bar on the arm of the couch and opening the next one before staring at it for a moment. “Lip…you didn’t have to. You really didn’t.”
“Please, yes I did. You love Harry Potter more than you love your porn.” Lip said, smiling a little. “I wanted to watch the movie with you, just you and me. No one’s home right now.”
“Put it in,” Ian said excitedly, handing the DVD to Lip.
“I always do,” Lip said, flashing Ian a small grin and hopping up, putting it in their old, crappy DVD player and settling back on the couch next to Ian, winding an arm around his shoulders. Ian leaned into Lip’s hold, wrapping his arms loosely around his older brother’s waist.
“Lip,” Ian said softly, looking up at him. “Thank you.” He stretched his neck a bit, giving Lip a small kiss. Lip kissed him back, pulling back.
“Anything for you.” He paused. “Anything for the one I love.” He kept his gaze on Ian until he felt tiny and small, because Ian was just staring at him. Was he dumb for saying the L word?
“…Lip, are you saying you love me?” Ian finally asked as the movie started.
“You’re missing the beginning, Ian,” Lip said quickly. “The theme song and everything.”
“Lip, are you saying you are in love with me?” Ian repeated, a bit louder.
“Yes, okay? I fucking love you.” Lip looked at Ian, swallowing thickly. “I’ll always love you.” Another heartbeat before Ian pressed his lips to Lip’s again, giving him a deep kiss.
“I love you too, Lip, I love you so much,” Ian breathed as he pulled back before resting his head on Lip’s shoulder.
Lip was smiling like a fool, he knew. He tugged Ian a little closer, watching the movie. “You know. I don’t know why you are so surprised. I thought it was obvious that we’re spending the rest of our lives together.”
“You’ve never said it in those exact words. I didn’t mind, because I knew you loved me. But hearing it, in that context, was really nice,” Ian explained quietly.
“I’ll try and remember to say it more often, if it means so much to you,” Lip said simply and quietly.
“I would like that,” Ian murmured, a smile plastered onto his face.
By the time the movie was over, Lip had fallen fast asleep, his face buried in Ian’s hair. Ian didn’t want to move, and even though he knew anyone could come home at any time, he stayed like that with Lip until he fell asleep. Nothing else mattered.
