“He does what he has to do,” Dean tries to explain, but the words seem weak even to him.
“He does what he wants to do, and he makes us believe it’s his responsibility to humanity.”
Love that, because it perfectly describes their different viewpoints of John at that moment in time. Very, very nicely written.
And Sam stares at him, as if he’s seeing Dean for the first time, and he grabs Dean and just hugs him. They haven’t hugged since they were little, running through mud puddles and squabbling over the eight-pack of crayons. While normally, Dean would have pushed him away with angry protests, he merely holds onto Sam and wonders when he will ever see his brother again.
Such a heartbreaking paragraph there, with Sam realizing just how much Dean loves him, and the memory of their childhood, and Dean allowing a real hug because he hurts that badly.
*hugs both boys*
Thanks for a good read.

I really think they must've had some idea that Sam was going to leave eventually. I have known people who, say, I went to high school with that I talked to and I knew that they were going to go off and do their own thing. And, sure enough, they've traveled abroad and moved out of state on their own. Also, especially since John and Dean were family, they were a lot closer to Sam, too. I just find it hard to believe that they would have had absolutely no idea that he would want to leave.
After John made that comment at the restaurant, he was clearly able to be in denial much better than Dean, who spent so much time with Sam, was so much closer to Sam, that it was hard to ignore the signs.
I think also--and this is just a random sort of thought--that Dean needed Sam more than John did. If Sam left, John would still have one son out of two, but Dean wouldn't have any siblings.
Thank you, as always, for your wonderful feedback; I appreciate it so much. :)

Agreed. Dean in particular would have figured it out, or at least known before Sam actually told John he got accepted to Stanford.
