Could you summarize what the intent is for moderation in this community?
I mean, I am sure I can guess, but it would be good to have it explicitly stated.
For instance, here's the start of such a list--what am I missing or in error about?
Moderation in the LJ Pittsburgh community is intended to allow a free discussion of ideas, news, and events; however
-personal attacks are not permitted (no name-calling, for example). Threats are not permitted. -requests for information or action on illegal activities (e.g., a request asking where the best place to buy pot is in Pgh) aren't allowed -discussion should be largely limited to topics, news, events, etc. that are relevant only to Pittburgh. If a topic is more general, to apply to other geographical areas as well, generally it should be moved to another forum. -"Blue" language is okay ?? I can say "fuck," for instance? Are there any profane terms that aren't allowed? I can say "fuck" probably, but can't call someone a "fuck," right? Because the latter is a personal attack, unlike the former? I know that's silly but I'm just trying to clarify. -What is the overall purpose of moderation? To--what? Keep the board from falling into an irredeemable fountain of wank? To keep signal to noise level high? I guess what I'm asking is, what is the worst case scenario if this board wasn't moderated?
Also, do you have any idea how many people are a member of this community? How large a "problem" is it?
Yeah, that's really it in a nutshell. I've been on several communities that went to shit (small amounts of blue language is pretty OK - I don't say anything unless somebody else is offended enough to bring it to my attention) because there wasn't an active mod and one person started some wank and the whole thing died. Hell, I was on a charity knitting community that got so wanktastic that nobody could post anything anymore without drama in the comments.
So really, the point of the mods is to just be there so that if something does need moderation, community members can contact them to step in. It's not about active policing - we're not that kind of community. It's really just about being there to smooth problems over when they happen. Other than getting rid of spam and the occasional flamewar like the Roethlisberger and Anthrocon things, all I really ever do is answer the occasional email saying "Is this OK to post on the community?"
And there over 1700 members, just shy of 1200 of whom are listed as watchers of the community, and I would guesstimate about 250-300 of whom participate actively on a regular basis.
Okay, and--aw, jeez, I go to the "info" page for the community, and there's all the rules and guidelines already listed in perfect clarity. Whups and duh. Sorry for not looking there first.
