Awesome. Looks like I will be working from home on Sunday since I can't get to my office w/o tons of trouble. Meh. Stoopid football.

STUPID FOOTBALL??????? rufushonkeriv January 30 2009, 23:02:17 UTC

(Actually I was the same way before I married a football fan and was forced into it, it's cool. :D )

Hah, this also happened to me. It's awful and sad, but I didn't even know who the Pittsburgh Steelers were until my fiance and I started dating. He considered me a good luck charm, though - that's the year they won one for the thumb!

(In my defense, my father, from upstate New York, was a diehard Bills fan. After so many repeated Super Bowl losses, my mother tended to herd the kids away from the TV anytime football came on because, naturally, my father was not a happy man when the game was on. It's also how I learned most English swear words.)

Awesome! We have the same story, except I'm the nutball lifelong Steelers fan and my husband was the good luck charm in '06. ;)

I moved to the 'Burgh for the baseball and dragged my Cincinnati-born and bred husband along with me. I think if I started cheering on the Stillers, I would find myself a divorcee. ;-P

(Excellent use of the Dramatic Prairie Dog Chipmunk.)

It's not the football. These people are not Steelers fan, they're assholes that use the Steelers as an excuse to be an asshole. Real fans don't destroy property when their team wins because they're actually happy.

I agree, stupid football... This is just insanely annoying and ridiculous. I may as well just call out on Sunday.

Back home we don't act like animals when the Rangers, Yankees or Giants win. I can't say the same for Islanders, Mets or Jets fans. This isn't because they're NOT scum, it's simply because they never make it far enough to win or lose in Championship games. And no one cares enough about the Devils.

Completely missing the point... headtilt22 January 31 2009, 00:41:58 UTC
this is actually in reply to the last 2 posts...have there been any reports of destroyed property or violence because of any Steeler wins? If so, I've missed them. The street closings are because people will be out on foot, celebrating, on streets that are normally high traffic areas. I don't think anyone is anticipating couch burnings or the like. It's just the sheer volume of people. I'm sure that streets were also closed for the victory parade after Super Bowl XL and there was no violence there.

Yes! The last time we won the Super Bowl, my friend and I wandered through Oakland where many people were setting garbage cans on fire and feeding the fires with chunks of material they'd ripped off of the bicycles they were smashing to pieces on the street.

We left when a bunch of people started flipping a car.

Clearly you HAVE missed the reports... destroying mail boxes and newspaper vending machines, hanging off of street signs, breaking parking meters AND flipping two cars. I'm sure there were plenty of store fronts damaged, too.

I was glad to see that in Squirrel Hill, where I live, people were just honking horns and walking around the streets HAPPY that their team won. That reminded me of back home.

I think this is exactly why I don't get into sports in the first place. I was born in Pittsburgh so I have been around and haven't been able to stand the craziness ever since I was a kid because of my family. It just never made any sense to me why people freak out so much over it. Sometimes I don't even think THEY understand why they do it. I also cringe every time I see a parent telling their kid to scream "go steelers" or some other catch phrase.
I can understand being excited, but some people just take it waaay too far, imho.
