Many years ago, Wachovia actually had that feature. It was pretty neato because you could enter a check in right as you write it, and some day in the future when it cleared if it didn't match up for some reason you'd even get a little alert. I used to love that.

Sadly, the feature was part of a totally homebrewed very early online banking system and what eventually bit Wachovia in the ass was that it didn't scale. So despite being first to market with a killer feature (NOBODY had anything like it around here back then) when they "upgraded" in a hurry to some crappy rushed off the shelf software later their online banking user experience went totally to crap. It was truly sad, and then only a year later they outsourced their credit cards (to MBNA, who did OH SO well with them, gah).

Anyways long story short, it would be neat if a large bank could ever scale a feature like that, but my guess is that it would never be cost positive beyond a certain number of accounts so it's best left a niche for the smaller guys. It sounds like Dollar has a pretty cool niche going for the folks it's perfect for, so props to your Pops.
