Shooting Trespassers?

I was wondering if anyone can point me to where I'd find information on the legalities around trespassers and what you can do to them? For instance, if they enter my home, can I shoot them? Do I have to warn them? If they're on a fenced, posted property, can I shoot them? What if I sic the dog on them in the house or in the yard (also posted)??

I live on the North Side if that makes a difference. We've had two trespassers in the yard already, and there's a pretty good possibility of being burglarized here. So I'm armed and perfectly okay with defending my home, I just don't want to go to jail for blowing some f*cked up meth head off the planet.
