A Five Questions meme from justice_turtle...

If you want to join in the meme:

What are the three things that most attract you to a fandom?
Comment with an answer to the question above.
I’ll respond by asking you five questions so I can get to know you better.
Post to your journal with the answers to the questions. Or if you want, post in the comments here. Or both!
Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions.

My thingies:
1. A certain level of scepticism - the world needs to acknowledge that there's a lot more grey than black and white.
2. Tormented characters. What can I do. I love the tormented-by-their-past characters!
3. Humour! I can't stand things that take themselves too seriously.

These are the questions justice_turtle asked me:
1: Which is your favorite Trek, and who is your favorite character from each Trek you've seen?
2: For DS9 - you mention you like Ferengi episodes. Which is your favorite Ferengi ep and your favorite Ferengi?
3: What is the thing with the giraffes on your journal?
4: How many languages do you know / speak / whatever?
5: Re your #1 - do you prefer fandoms where the morality leans more toward grey-and-black, grey-and-white, or grey-and-grey?

These are my answers:
1. Favourite Trek is DS9. I've watched TOS (as early as I can remember myself! The first thing I can remember watching on telly is The Search for Spock! I must have been 5 and not understanding a word cos we have subtitles in Israel, not dubs...), and I've also watched TNG, and I loved them both - at the time at least. I still enjoy TOS, but TNG, whenever I've run into it in the past couple of years, was... I dunno. Disappointing. I haven't watched Voyager - only three or four episodes, and I dunno, I didn't connect to it. Possibly DS9 ruined me to other Treks - the space station thing makes it very different from the other Treks, doesn't it? But I felt it allowed them to delve a lot deeper into things that interest me and weren't quite possible with ship-based Trek.
Also, I think I watched half an episode of Enterprise... Wasn't impressed.

Favourite character? Let's see.
TOS - McCoy. I love his sarcasm :D
TNG: I'd have to go with Data and Geordie. Each of them is a great character, but they're brilliant together. They're the only thing I managed to enjoy (well, and Sir Patrick!) when I caught it again.
DS9: Hmm. Kira. But only because Garak appears in maybe a quarter of the episodes. Kira and Garak & Bashir? Garak & Bashir being, much like Geordie and Data, much better together than they are on their own :)

2. LITTLE GREEN MEN! It's the definition of gorgeous! :D If I remember correctly, the Magnificent Ferengi is also wonderful, but the fact that I actually remember Little Green Men vividly even though I haven't made it there yet in my rewatch (I'm just on season 3) is a good indication that I love it to bits.
My favourite Ferengi? Quark. Rom. Nog. Quark. Rom... I can't choose! :(

3. OOOOOOH! Have I never told the Giraffe Story here?
Alright then.

Have you ever wondered why giraffes have such long necks?
SO THEY COULD SPY ON US.
Have you ever wondered why giraffes have antennae?
SO THEY COULD TRANSMIT THE INFORMATION THEY COLLECT!

YES! Giraffes are not, in fact, of this earth, but are the forefront of an invasion. They wish to conquer and enslave us all. They are (ta-dam) EVIL.

... Hm. I'm sure this explanation used to be longer. :|

4. Languages....
So, native is Hebrew, of course. English I guess is near native level.
Those are the only two I can really speak.
I can also read to various levels Modern Welsh, Middle Welsh, Attic Greek, Modern Greek, Old Icelandic, Japanese, Bohairic Coptic, Written Arabic and French (actually, I could probably do well with any IE language with the help of a dictionary and a decent grammar. I had a seminar in my last year of undergraduate studies that was basically, "here's a piece of text in a language, go to the library and get as much as you can out of it."). I've started looking at Irish Gaelic, too, but it's kinda been forgotten :|.
Now I'm wondering if I should also add Biblical Hebrew to the list. We have to go through 11(!!) years of bible study at school, in Biblical Hebrew, but our teachers pretend it's the same language as we speak and it's just written funny. Which, of course, is complete nonsense. But I did pick up some things, so maybe?
I speak very little and very badly (but read even worse): Khalkha Mongolian, Mandarin Chinese, and Palestinian Arabic.
AND, if I get to the PhD I wish to get to, I could add Tłı̨chǫ Yatiì (Dogrib) to the list.

5. I think I prefer grey-and-grey. It depends on the fandom, of course. Some of my favourite fandoms are grey-and-white. For example, my current fic writing muse is for Harry Potter, which is definitely grey-and-white. Doctor Who also stays firmly in the grey-and-white territory. But my view of the world is pretty much grey-and-grey, and so I like it when fandom actually reflects that! I think it doesn't get reflected very often, though. It tends to depress people. It's too close to reality, isn't it? You can get a lot of escapism from black-and-white, grey-and-white, and even grey-and-black, because that's far enough from our own reality to not feel true. But grey-and-grey... there's nowhere to run when you admit "it's complicated" and sigh in defeat. :)

People are SO going to hate this Harry Potter fic by the time I'm done with it. Haha.

adherent of the repeated meme, obsessions galore
