"What are you supposed to be?" Phil scowled, looking at Poppy's best friend. Since their parents had broken up earlier in the year, their mom had been working a lot of overtime, and she'd asked if James's nanny would take them trick-or-treating. Phil hadn't wanted to go with James last year, and his feelings hadn't improved since last Halloween. "Seriously. Are you Godzilla or something?"
Stepping out of the reach of Phil's wooden sword, James adjusted the tail of his costume. "I'm a dragon," he replied testily.
Through the tiny slit in his knight helmet, Phil's eyes narrowed in disbelief. "Yeah right. Dragons have wings and breathe fire and all that."
"Stop fighting!" Poppy demanded, flouncing down the stairs in a cloud of pale blue tulle. Their mother had completely forgotten about Halloween this year, despite the twins' constant nagging, so their costumes were a last-minute affair-and, much to their twinly annoyance, they matched. "Let's go get some candy before Mom yells at us for making too much noise." Lately, any noise had been Too Much Noise, so Poppy was glad to be gone.
James's nanny was talking to Phil about jousting, so Poppy and James hung back a bit. "It is a dragon," he said. His voice was sulky, but there was something dark and predator-quick in his eyes that made Poppy's gait falter. "Not all dragons have wings-"
"Of course. And not all princesses trust the knight in shining armour," Poppy replied, giving him a quick peck on the cheek. "Some princesses choose the dragon."
