Just wanted to clarify something:
I do not think that illegal immigration is good, not at all... But I know that we need these people's labor - our economy depends on them filling the jobs Americans do not want. The whole industries (farm labor, construction, meatpacking, landscaping) depends on and would collapse without them. Those are also the people who come here empty handed and buy all those big - ticket items they do not have: houses, cars, appliances, furniture etc. They buy much more than Americans who already have most of the stuff. They give our economy a big shot in the arm. They work hard and do not complain. They help keep our Social Security system solvent. Last but not the least, they help fill the demographic gap.
Many of my American friends think of these people as lawbreakers. What my friends do not realize is that under existing immigraion laws these people have NO legal way to come here. The only way they can fill the very much needed jobs is by becoming lawbreakers.
These immigration laws are neither reasonable nor fair. What is even more important, THESE LAWS ARE AGAINST OUR NATIONAL INTEREST. We need these people, and for our own sake we need them to have a stake in our society rather than being disenfranchised marginals.
So let us change these laws, let these much needed workers come here legally, and let us control who come here - the people of our choice, the harder working and law abiding ones rather than those who are simply better than others at avoiding border controls....
