I've made laundry soap. It works! Washing soda and Borax are in the laundry aisle. When she says soap flakes I think it is soap that is grated like cheese. I use Ivory for my laundry soap but it does float and didn't mix very well. This is one way we can all save money and help the planet. After all why give money to corperations that are responsible for using chemicals, and are jumping on the Green bandwagon for money?  Oh and if you haven't read him yet check out Don Ashlett. He writes about decluttering and cleaning better then anyone. He delves into the phychology of buying "stuff"  for emotional reasons, which turns into clutter. He's great! Of course I buy his books used, on abebooks.
