Mother, 20, admits guilt in death of daughter

Victoria Winkler pleaded guilty Tuesday to second-degree manslaughter in the dehydration death of her 18-month-old daughter.
State Supreme Court Justice Penny M. Wolfgang told Winkler she faces a likely prison term of 11/3 to 4 years when sentenced Feb. 20.
Winkler, 20, pleaded guilty as charged in the death of her daughter, Destiny Staley, admitting she failed to provide fluids and food for her.
The baby was found dead in her playpen July 16 in an apartment police said was filled with dog feces and mold. The temperature in the apartment was about 90 degrees, and the windows were shut.
A Women and Children's Hospital medical team determined that Destiny had been without fluids for 48 to 78 hours in the overheated apartment at 276 Potomac Ave.
Deputy District Attorney Frank A. Sedita III told the judge the pretrial plea was acceptable because a grand jury had lodged the second-degree - or accidental - manslaughter charge.
Winkler declined to comment as she was taken from court in handcuffs by sheriff's deputies.
Winkler has been jailed since her Aug. 22 arrest at the Erie County Family Court Building, where she was appearing at a custody hearing involving her 3-year-old son. The boy is now living with his grandparents.
