OK, so much has happened since the last time I posted here. I am only doing this because I don't know when is the next time I'll be updating my Livejournal...Found a dead blackbird outside today. It had hit the glass at a bus stop. Ironically she had survived all the winter, and just when it had all gotten better, there wasn't suddenly any time left for her. Goodbye, little birdie! You're better off wherever you are now.
I was in Scotland- didn't stay there since I didn't get a good enough job for myself. Met some cool new people and hung out with the ones I already knew. DAMN one of the few reasons why I'm going to miss Stirling are my friends. Also, for some strage reason, I feel patriotic whenever I hear bagpipes. This, of course is strange since I'm not scottish...but I guess it's just one of the side effects of living in Scotland for four years...
So me and Jimmygirl started looking for a flat once I got back here. At the same time, I was living with my mommy and daddy, which was living hell sometimes because three grown ups just didnt fit in the house anymore. We found a cheap flat after only a week of searching, and we are moving in tomorrow! This is actually why I don't know the date of my next update. I still don't have internet connection in the other flat! Everything is packed, all I need to do is get into the van and move. I've bought some furniture, cleaned some of the new home and taken some stuff there but the big day is going to be tomorrow! Everyone, feel free to visit me! Of course I have to ask Jimmygirl first, but I'm sure she's not going to be very harsh on you. hehe
Last week I did my first REAL Greenpeace action in Kemi, Lapland. The Finnish Metsahallitus is selling wood that is cut from ancient forests, such as those from the areas of Peurakaira and Pokka-Pulju (as well as 5 or 6 other areas). In my individual opinion, these forests should be protected by the law, as
1)they don't consist a big percentage of the forestry companies's production (about 1% or a bit more)
2)They are extremly important for the Same reindeer herders as well as tourism in those areas
3)They have several threatened species living in them that need to have every inch they can in order to survive
4)What kind of forests are we going to show the future generations? This?
5)Most old trees are too dense to become building material, so they become pulp and toilet paper. So we wipe our asses on 500-year-old trees. How respectful...We blockaded the gates of two factories- I was chained to the front gate but didn't get arrested. On the next day, when we were on our 11- hour journey back to Helsinki, we heard Stora Enso (the one whose factory I chained myself to) no longer wants to buy wood from those areas until the ministry has done more research on them. Metsa Botnia still buys wood from thousand year old forests.
I still smell dead fish somewhere, as the loggings would be stopped anyway by this time and, if needed, they can start selling the wood again when the ground is in better condition for big machines, but they are definitely on their toes just now hehe. Also there was a talk program where the person responsible for our forest campaign and a same reindeer herder were debating against a guy from Lapland's alliance and the boss of Metsahallitus. The GP representative spoke SOO well!! Also the Same man did well, but the two money mongers were silenced and could no longer have decent arguments. I know I know, Greenpeace can be criticised, but could you show me one more organisation that has achieved as much as GP? And I mean worldwide.
Anyway, it was such a cool trip and I met soo many REALLY nice people there! Probably going to meet many of them in the G8 this year if I ever get there. I hope there's going to be another trip like that soon enough! I LOVE direct action! Its the way to go.
This is Lapland! Though wherever you go people always say it begins from north of the place they're staying :P
Why do I always fall for guys who just want to play a little bit and then leave me alone to lick my wounds?
