Tonight I had a Refugee House planning committee meeting at Black Dog, it was a little long for my taste, but everything seems to be going well for the Women Rock music festival, which is taking place on 3/18. The headliners are Holly Near, Dar Williams and Alix Olson, we're still looking for smaller female bands, so if any of you guys know any rockin' bands, let me know. Tickets go on sale Jan. 16, $30 before Feb 28 and $50 after.
After the meeting I stayed to have coffee with Natalie, who I haven't seen since before Christmas break, so it was really great hanging out with her and catching her up on all of the gossip that she missed while she was at home for the holidays. We ended up talking about Judy Chicago; I have the card from her Retrospective exhibit she did here at the FSU gallery in 1999 pasted onto the back of my binder, so we started talking about how much we both love her art work and think she's amazing and how much Woman House both freaked us out and rocked our socks at the same time.
My classes are going to kick my ass this semester; I'm taking Theatre History II, Costuming I, Costume Lab, Fabric Modification and Wigs and Make-up. Besides Theatre History, the rest of the classes are all project driven, which means they're going to take up a lot of time and at the end of the semester when everything is do, I probably won't get much sleep, and when I do, I'll be crying myself to sleep because of stress. Of course, I'm super excited about my classes, they're looking really interesting and they're taught my the heads of the dept, so I'll be learning so much and hopefully impress them so that they can confidentally recommend me in the future. I'm starting to feel more at home in the theatre program, especially in the costume shop, which is great. Its always hard to come into an environment where everyone is already established.
Originally I was trying to get into a 8:00am spanish class this semester, but everytime I tried it was full. On Tuesday I was heading to Strozier on my lunch break to get on-line and check in a seat had opened up, when I asked to share one of the outside tables with a girl who looked nice. I pulled out my book and started to peel my orange when she asked how I was doing. We started to chat and I learned that she was really involved with the Baptist Student Union and was in charge of the Women's Outreach program, warning lights started to go off in my head at this point, but she was just so Goddamn nice that I kept talking to her. She was doing such a good job of being inoffensive and the subject was interesting. I actually told her about the trip my own faith has taken and how I've been questioning everything I every believed these past couple of years and how some days I don't believe in anything, while on others I'm sure that there must be some purpose to all of this, some order in the chaos. It was a weird conversation and it happened totally be chance but I walked away from the library with a light heart and realized later that I still hadn't registered for the spanish class. During my next class I discovered that Martha was teaching her Wigs and Make-up class, which she only teaches every other spring, I had friday morning free and so she put me into it. It's funny how things work out.
