Beached On Kitsilano Beach

Apr 18, 2010 18:02

Winds and a storm almost 10 days ago ended with 4 boats washed up onto Kitsilano Beach. One of the boats shortly floated back to sea and another was smashed beyond recovery. A fifth one was destroyed after running into some rocks at nearby Vanier Park.

Some of these boats broke free of their moorings, some others were "squatter boats". Moorage in the Vancouver Lower Mainland is hard to come by and almost impossible find. Aside from the long waiting lists, it is also very expensive. While some of the boat squatters live on what can be defined as "barges" at best, many others are just unable to obtain proper moorage because of this problem.

It has been over a week since the boats were beached. I heard that the boats were still there and the city was threatening to charge the owners if they did not remove their boats from the sand.

The unfortunate trimaran.

I suppose the ocean, beach and boats do tend to bring out the romance in people...

... and I suppose the ocean, beach and boats do tend to bring out the dogs too. ;P
