NAME; Delirium (no human name ever given in canon. I wanted to use “Delilah Evers” if that’s all right.)
SERIES; The Sandman
GENDER; Female
AGE; 14 (Aged down. A lot.)
GRADE; Freshman; 9th
CLASS;
CANON HISTORY;
-The youngest of the seven Endless, which are beings that are older than the universe.
-Originally was Delight. Something happened to her eons ago that caused her to change to Delirium. Even her brother Destiny, whose book contains everything in the universe, doesn’t know why. Delirium can only remember in brief moments of clarity.
-Destruction was the one who helped her through the transition to Delirium. She was crushed when he abandoned his duties.
-Decided to go search for Destruction so the family could be whole again. She convinced Dream to come with her.
-Dream gave up on the quest after people kept dying. Del shut herself off from everyone until Dream apologized and agreed to continue the search.
-They found Destruction, but he didn’t want to return. So they had a nice chat and dinner, Destruction gave Del his dog Barnabus, and then Destruction left to wander the stars.
-Later on Delirium gets separated from Barnabus and tries to convince Dream to search for him. This is while Dream is in the middle of a fight with the Kindly Ones. While searching on her own Del tells Nuala, a former servant of Dream, that he is in trouble, which causes Nuala to summon Dream out of his realm, allowing the Kindly Ones to enter it and kill him.
-Sometime later she has some kind of mental breakdown where she has turned so far in on herself that her siblings can’t help her. The new Dream, Barnabas, and Matthew the raven herd up some crazy people to bring her back. It’s never really explained why she had a breakdown, but the imagery implies rape (but then the people also have fish for heads), and a secondary character muses that it could have been a broken heart.
-The last anyone knows Destruction was watching over Delirium to make sure she recovered from that last breakdown.
CANON ABILITIES;
-Oh, here we go. Canonically the Endless aren’t really “people” in their own right… they have separate identities and memories, but they really are just the personifications of concepts. Think of it like the Homunculi from the FMA manga. If one version of any Endless dies, another incarnation is created with all their same memories and abilities, just a slightly different personality. They exist on some level of reality other than our own, where they all have their own realms from which they can observe our reality.
-Endless aren’t quite omnipresent, but they’re close. Delirium is the personification of insanity. Every person is slightly insane, and so she “exists” in everyone to an extent. Some humans are more “hers” than others. She knows more about these people, and in turn they might find her familiar in some way. Like the nagging feeling that you’ve met her, you’ve had conversations with her, but you can’t for the life of you remember where. It is shown that she can possess her people temporarily and see through their eyes or influence them more easily.
-The Endless have some subtle unconscious power over reality. Del describes it such: an Endless can stand on a street corner and have their attention drawn to a lightning strike in the sky above them. For years later people will find themselves standing there, looking up at the same spot of sky, and have no idea what they’re looking for. Also strange things seem to happen where two or more of them gather.
-Delirium’s specific powers involve driving people mad, giving them hallucinations, and generally messing with their minds. She can also do strange things like turn into a swarm of butterflies or create singing fish out of midair.
AU HISTORY;
-Del was not born to a happy family. They were a dysfunctional bunch, but she was naturally a happy child and managed to have a good childhood for a while.
-When she was six her father lost his job and began physically abusing Del and her mom.
-After a few months Del’s oldest brother found out about it and convinced their mom to get a divorce.
-For a short time they moved in with her brother, who became her best friend. He inspired her to think about art and writing fantastical stories.
-When Del was ten her brother, who was in the military, was ordered to go on duty. He disagreed with the situation and deserted. No one knows where he went.
-Without her brother around Del became more shy again, but managed to get by reasonably well. She gained a lot of praise at home and at school for her imaginative art projects, which helped.
-Got into the Academy mostly based on her art and music skills. Her mom thinks it’s a great opportunity for her to become a more independent person.
PERSONALITY;
Del is basically very childish and immature. When she’s in a good mood she’s incredibly curious, imaginative, friendly, and playful. She loves investigating things and wandering off on “adventures” even when the subject is something rather mundane. Del has an unbelievably vivid imagination. She never quite outgrew playing pretend. She’s also easily distracted on top of being easily bored, so at times Del might simply stop whatever she’s doing and go investigate something that caught her eye.
Initially Del is usually shy. She doesn’t automatically trust new people, stammers and avoids eye contact, and sometimes even hides from them. It takes her a moment or two to warm up to people, and hates being the center of attention. But once she decides she likes someone Del is very talkative and may try to get them to go on a spur-of-the-moment adventure with her. If she decides she doesn’t like someone, however, Del doesn’t give many extra chances. She can be downright petty and cruel to people she doesn’t like. She can be somewhat desperate for approval and is incredibly disheartened and reactionary when someone tries to correct her or if she doesn’t get her way. Depending on their relationship this can range from throwing a tantrum and locking herself in her room moping to shouting and arguing with the person right there-and later putting something terrible in their shoes. She generally likes people to be happy, but cross her and face Hell. Oh, and she’ll enjoy every moment of it.
Almost everything about Del’s personality is extreme. She’s either extremely happy or extremely upset. There’s almost no room in there for a calm moment. If she’s alone and not getting into trouble, you can be assured she’s drawing, painting, dancing, or singing if she’s in a good mood, crying and moping if not. But Del doesn’t really like being alone. She enjoys the company of friends, but her seemingly boundless energy and mercurial personality may overwhelm them.
At times conversation with Del may seem to be disjointed and difficult to follow. She has a hard time expressing herself and often forgets words. Coupled with her incredible knack for getting distracted, it makes talking with Del very confusing at times. She will often have a point in her rambling, it just might take a while to get there. She’s scatterbrained, but when faced with a confusing situation Del can usually grasp the grand concept. The details, not so much. Del tends to be touchy about most of her personality quirks, but she isn’t bothered by her communication problems. She sees it more as the other person’s problem that they don’t think the way she does.
RP SAMPLES
JOURNAL POST;
H-hi. I’m a few days late I guess but at least I didn’t miss too much. Did I? I didn’t mean to. They said it wasn’t that bad and usually the first week is easy but then I’ve never been to highschool before and everyone said it was a lot harder.
This is a big room with only one person here! I hope someone else gets here soon. It’s kind of lonely. Um, at least there’s a big TV room downstairs. Can I use it? The TV. Not the room. I’d be in the room but I wouldn’t be using it. Someone else can do that.
THIRD-PERSON SAMPLE;
Del peered around the corner. There was no one there. Good! She stayed close to the wall for now, slowly creeping closer to her goal. She thought she was creeping, at least. It was a bit hard to be inconspicuous with vivid orange-red-blonde streaked hair and a bright yellow jacket. But Del didn’t think anyone could see her, and for now that was all that mattered.
Closer, ever closer. She took one silent step at a time. And soon it was in reach.
“Gotcha!” Del shouted as she lunged at the large frog. It gave a surprised ribbit and hopped out of the way. It wasn’t fast enough. Del snatched it, just barely keeping herself from falling on the ground as she did so. Then she held the squirming frog over her head with both hands like a trophy. “I looked everywhere that wasn’t here for you, Barn! I should get you a leash. It’ll be a pretty little frog leash and it’ll have your name on it so everyone’ll know not to put you in the science lab, okay?” The frog, of course, neither responded nor knew what was going on. It was helpless as the teenage girl brought it back to the dorm, not realizing that her roommate was the one who had thrown out the “nasty thing” earlier.
