During therio lab yesterday we were discussing various methods for improving the breeding management of the bitch. Apparently, the only accurate way to determine pregnancy through bloodwork is to measure relaxin levels. This is fairly unique to the dog, because relaxin is produced by the placenta and not the corpus luteum as it is by most other species. Obviously a nonpregnant bitch is not going to have a placenta, hence no relaxin levels in the blood. What caught my attention in class was not the explanation of this physiology but the inclusion of the cow as one of the species that produces relaxin in the corpus luteum. Being the
bovine relaxin master that I am, this really pisses me off. Everytime someone talks about relaxin they say this, which has never been proven to be true. It makes me wonder how much of the crap I listen to every day is actually true. After class, my
fellow relaxin master, Nicole, and I stayed to make sure that the professor knew that cows don't have relaxin. I know this makes me incredibly dorky, but there are very few times in life that I can take joy out of proving someone above me wrong.
On a side note, I'm also pissed that I wasn't listed as an author on Nicole's paper. I know I contributed a lot more than a certain Michael Fields did.
