One day, Scorpius Malfoy had a brilliant idea while he was sitting on the floor in the upstairs living area of Hogwarts. Turning to Albus who was sitting next to him singing with himself, he asked him for his opinion.
“Albus” he said, interrupting his melody, “do you think it’s about time I played a prank on James? I mean, it’s been a while since the last one, so…”
“On James?” he repeated in conformation, “I don’t know Scorpius, James seems to take them too seriously and always ends up believing you..”
“That’s why it’s funny,” Scorpius smiled, finding Albus' concern to be quite adorable, “but I need your permission first before I do it.”
“Why’s that?” he asked.
“”Because I’m going to pretend to confess to him.”
“What?!” Albus cried, his cheeks turning slightly red and his hands going up to cover his mouth, “confess to him?!”
“Yeah, and if he falls for it then that’ll be so hilarious, don’t you think?”
Albus didn’t seem to fully agree. “But, he'll get mad” he said, embarrassed, “you can’t do that!”
Seeing that he was uncomfortable with seeing these two together even when it was going to be pretend, Scorpius decided it was time to end the conversation, “so if it’s pretend then that’s ok?”
Albus shifted in his seat, “Well I have no problems considering it’s not real, but-”
“Then let’s go find him and do it!” Scorpius said quickly, standing up and holding out a hand to help his boyfriend up, “I just needed you to know that it doesn’t mean anything.”
Practically running down the stairs and out of the door before Albus could change his mind or protest too much, the pair of them arrived at James’ room.
After banging on the door loudly several times, James finally let them in with a whine at being disturbed on a day off.
Sitting down on the low bed beside his friend while Albus took up residence on the floor (because he wanted to keep well out of the way, considering he didn’t know what Scorpius was planning), Scorpius got straight to the point.
“James,” he said very seriously after declining a drink, looking into his friend’s eyes intently and showing he meant business, “there is something that I have to talk to you about.”
James, being the gullible cutie that he was, didn’t notice his brother's blushing or the obviousness of the lie; he leaned in closer, his brow furrowed slightly. “What’s the matter? Is there a problem between you and…” he gestured to Albus with an inclination of his head, but Scorpius shook his.
“No, that’s not it,” he said, seeing the way his friend relaxed a little, showing his almost childish smile again, “but you must know that we’re not together anymore.”
“Really?!” James exclaimed, nearly falling off the bed in shock only to be saved by his friend as he caught him by the belt of his trousers and roughly yanked him back up into a sitting position, “why did you guys split up? And why did you come here together if you did?!” He really was dense - anyone else would have seen through their plan by now, but James wasn’t exactly famed for his brain power, which was why he was an easy target for his best friend.
Albus coughed into his hand, not trusting himself to speak.
“Because Albus wants to wish me good luck,” Scorpius said in a plain and flat voice, bracing himself for what was about to come. Yes; he would do this, just so he could laugh at James for believing him later.
“Good luck?” The big brother asked, confused. Scorpius could almost see the cogs turning in his head. Almost.
“Yes. The reason why we broke up,” he took a deep breath in, then suddenly, grasped James by the shoulders, “is because of you!”
“M-Me?!” James cried, not understanding.
“Yes, you,” The blond said, fighting down the laughter, “It’s because I love you, James!”
James still didn’t understand. Even though he was the type of guy who would usually be the first to get it, today he did not. Must have been a day off for his brain, too.
“Aww, Scorp,” he said fondly, plonking his hands on top of his friend’s, which were still on his shoulders, “thanks for that! I love you too man, you’re a great friend.”
Scorpius could have laughed, but he didn’t. Albus did, though, but very quietly. “No, not like that,” he said seriously, inching closer, “I. Love. You.”
And it finally clicked. Opening his mouth wide in shock and horror, James made a high-pitched sound at the back of his throat and flailed around in Scorpius’s grasp, lurching to the side a little too violently at one point. Suddenly, Scorpius was leaning over a bewildered James and kissing him hard on the lips, ignoring Albus' protest crying to go off his brother now. This time Scorpius has gone too far.
