tonight kyle and i close on an awesome 2 bedroom apartment in a triplex. i will post pictures once it is all set up and such. it is the first living space i've ever been able to call my own (including rent, which is exensive, but i have a job interview with the ACLU tomorrow morning, so maybe i'm on a roll...), so let me show it off, please?
it is located in the southeast area of portland, which is notorious for being full of hippies, hookah bars, environmentalists, food co-ops, bike collectives, hot young people and cafe collectives. lots of people with cool hair walk and bike around everywhere.
i've only seen one Hummer since arriving in portland, and it was in the suburbs. go figure.
everyone here is awesomely nice.
i'm kinda pissed about how my class schedule worked out, but, so be it. class is not the reason i'm here.
portland is the most bike-friendly city in the US, so that will be my main mode of transportation. Portland State has a climbing wall in the rec center, so thats where i plan to be for at least a 107 hours a week, give or take. bikes and rock climbing is all i need to maintain my health. oh...and this difficult gluten-free, dairy-free, sugar-free diet i have to be on. but it is making me appreciate the deliciousness of vegetables. i've actually started preferring healthy foods like kale, nuts and soymilk over foods like candy and soda. it's amazing, especially if you know how much i use to love junk food and rockstar...wait. i still want rockstar. but perhaps that will dissipate as well.

in other news, i wanted to thank all the people who hung out at our house over the summer. barbara, kaitlin and i had an awesome fucking time chilling with people there and some great memories were created. i feel a lot closer to a lot of very awesome people in my life. the things i learned tis summer have affected me to the point where i think i grew up a whole lot. thank you, guys. i love you lots.

i miss everyone back home a lot. since we have a place here, everyone should come visit. that would be the best thing ever, my friends.

there are these threads that i realized exist in my life. threads that seem almost invisible at times, but upon closer inspection, they shine brightly when exposed to the sun. like a spiderweb. the thread of a spider's web, they say, is stronger than a thread of steel the same size. these naturally occurring threads are what the spiders use to create magnificently intricate, symmetrical works of art. it takes hours and hours and they never mess up. a big clumsy human might walk through the web and destroy it in less than the time it takes to draw a breath, but the spiders know they need the web. they need it to eat, to sleep, to survive. so they start anew, just like that, without a complaint, as many times as it takes. these spiders can do something humans can't even dream of doing, and they do it without any thought as to who gets credit for it, or who will see it. they do it for themselves and their own existence. the threads in my life connect me to the people and ideas that give me a reason to breathe, to sleep, to eat. sometimes they seem to be destroyed, but they are slowly built again, for the remnants are still there and always will be. all you need to rebuild them is honest, hard work and patience. and a large helping of humble creativity.

i like spiders.
