Where Three Rivers Became Forever
three forks of a river
are drawn together
under the spell of their fate
they keep flowing, keep falling
they seek distance from their beginning
fleeing from the apex of the hill
the point (in time and place)
where they met
and learned what it is to be intertwined.
they move on
keep flowing, keep leaving.
propelled from somewhere deep within
by the weight of soil and tiny fish
they move on
steer themselves away from places where they might stay
(it is easier that way)
the days are long, and though their gentle pathways
shed stones against the bed
the load they bear wears upon them.
their waters are always pursuing old demons
and the streams learn
what it is to be thin, to be
a ruinous impression of the ocean
their unification is the curse of their fate
the streams learn what it is to be together
to share the power to move silt and sand
but the weight of their burden is more colorful
and their pathway will always be moving away
(it is easier that way).
